Nerves come from fear. What is fear ? emotions that protect your phisical or mental from hurt. From your situation, I see that mental hurt was something you want to avoided.
Three possibilities to trash the nerves:
1. Look for confortable place. take a long breath and release it slowly, and keep your concentration on how the breaths get in and out. Keep do it until you feel relax. You will feel better. After that keep saying to your self "Everything will be okay" about 3-5 minutes.
2. Analyse your fear, use your logic, find the cause of your nerves, why that happened to you. Keep analyse it and find how to solve it.
3. Last option, if this nerves come from phobia or trauma. Try some NLP (Neural Linguistic Programming), Self Hypnosis, or psychologic therapist or assistant of the professional of them. Nothing magic or evil about them, just look for a medical ones. You can find more informations on search engine

You mean debate as in debate...these morons don't know what they are talking about then.
I am also in debate...and it helps to not take a crap before a round...remember debaters have to be full of **** to win the rounds.
If you are new, in Novice class, you're probably not going to get to state or regionals, mostly having lay judges, i.e. the librarian, your mom... Meaning that they don't know the game, and sucking up to them and telling them what they want to hear wins you the round.
It will be hard to prove solvency, funding, and harms this year...also watch out for counterplans and kritiks, they wre obviously fishing for these when writing the topic.
I dislike the topic, but your affirmative may contain things about people on welfare, or people who just got out of college, join public service organization and get their loans paid off.
And no, you can't prepare yourself when you are neg., so be on your toes, listen and write your speech during theirs. And you don't have to have it completely written--avoid using prep time as much as possible, it gives them prep time too, which comes off your clock however.
I'm sharing much more than I should probably, and my welfare idea was off the chain huh?
And oh yeah, if you are with a more experienced, or someone who is just plain smarter than you, be 1AC...it really humbles them. Also, be prepared for any question that they may ask you in cross examination, your debate partner can help you find weak points in your case.

In a debate, know your subject matter. Really have your facts straight, know where you stand, what those selling points are for you about that particular subject. Once you feel strong about your position and how to defend it, just take deep breaths and take your time rebutting, so you don't have these knee-jerk emotional comebacks but well thought out responses. Also, try to imagine your debate opponent sitting their in their underwear - imagine how vulnerable they must be feeling! And you're all professional in your 3-piece suit!!!

Do a shot of tequila. Also make sure you are familiar and comfortable with the material. Practice, practice, practice. Take deep breaths to steady yourself. Unless the person is weird, the person you are debating against is nervous too.

It's always hard when debating. Just focus on what you have to say and try to look at someone you know. That will make you a bit calmer. And just talk nice and slow and clear too.

Practice with a friend. The more familiar you are with speaking and thinking on your feet you more confident you will feel. Research your topic thoroughly. Knowledge and confidence are powerful tools. Good luck, friend.
