In stylistic terms he was an oddity: contemporary with the Cubists, but not part of their movement, he forms a bridge between the generation of Toulouse-Lautrec and the Art Deco painters of the 1920s.

Modigliani is known for his portraits in a modern style characterized by elongation of faces and figures, which are not symmetrical.

He was a man intensely impacted by his own life experiences, and viewed people in distorted images. Who can say where the line lies that separates us from the outer world beyond our own skin? His images tended to be long and gaunt. I never saw his work distorted into short and plump, such as Rubenesque ladies. It is safe to say that his own personal demons defined his view of the world. Genius defines itself and does not need approval from others. Few people in life have such immense power to create new ways of looking at life. Picasso was one, and Modigliani was another.

Yes he was a modern artist. His style was his own and very distinctive at that. If one were to try to describe his work to another one might use terms like 'elongation' and 'realistic color'. I would say he was a composition master!
