I thought everyone knew about the late-education work schemes, but I mean a few years earlier. It would not damage a child psychologically (unless abuse was involved).

And of course it isn't romantic! Just sober.

reason why is its good work experience but i have had two work experience kids recently and i had to get rid of them two days into it as they were crap, so now i would be reluctant to take anymore
you would need to establish a good link with the company and make sure the child know what is involved and build on it from there

This is a brilliant idea, i work at a small unit for excluded children where we do this for students in yrs 10 and 11, they go 1 or 2 days/week to college plus 1 day work experience and the rest at the unit doing basic maths, english, science. Did you know that the govt (may they rot in hell) have plans to bring this initiative in for all students by 2009, big upheaval, will be a nightmare for all, but the basic idea is good, if ill considered ,under funded etc

Yes it should. Too much emphasis is placed on the academic side, and some children are not academic. It doesn't mean they are thick, it just means they are better suited to practical skills, which have been neglected. If children were guided into what they can do to make them employable, then I am all for it.

It would give them a sense of what is out there for them, and encourage them to learn more at school, so less would be excluded and on the scrap heap.

I think it's a pretty good idea in principle.

The problem is that it might interfere with the educational process.

The best way would be to add another year to schooling. Make that the work experience year, and focus the years education purely on the career path followed.

i think maybe that you are not english as we do indeed have work experience in year 10 (age 14 to 15) my work experience was within a drama and art department i found the experience very rewarding and my employers were very accomodating it also gave me my first taste of real work and takes away the romantic view you have of working at that age so yes i do think it is important to have work experience whilst at school its an important lesson!

Work experience already is integrated with schooling, Didnt you go on a work placement for a few weeks in year 10?
