Windows messenger cannot be removed simply. go to http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_messenger_remove.htm and download the utility or just follow the instructions to remove windows messenger. If you want to remove msn messenger then just go to control panel, add or remove program and remove it.

REGEDIT4
Disable Windows Messenger 4.7.3000/1
Copyright ©2006 The Mole
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE
\Policies\Microsoft
\Messenger\Client]
"PreventRun"=dword:00000001
Paste into a text file and save .reg.
Text in brackets should be as one line (no spaces).
This is great if you prefer MSN Messenger and don't want Windows Messenger loading up.

I normally open windows messenger, go to TOOLS, scroll down to OPTIONS, go to PREFERENCES. Now uncheck all the checkboxes under GENERAL and ALERTS. Hope that helps.
