If you are talking about a small, operating model, I'd say better take a second mortgage on the house for funding.
Mag-levs work on electrical current, lots of it, that levitate the equipment above, creating spontaneous electro-magnets.
Magnets with the same polarity repel each other, and this is where the "lift" for the levitation comes from. Then the current is turned off and on, in series, moving forward, which moves the equipment forward.
If, however, you are trying to demonstrate the principle, it can be done simply, with two magnets and a thin piece of material, such as a sturdy piece of plastic, or such. Place one magnet on top, and manipulate one below. The magnet on the top will move as polls of the same polarity come into close proximity.
