The Australian cattle dog can only be shown in AKC conformation or trials with a natural tail..
I sure don't know why people dock them..

However, my Queensland healer had a docked tail when I got her..I bred her to my uncle's Border Collie, as he trains working cattle dogs..The pups were born with bobbed tails...So, I assume my healer was too. When I mention this to others, I have been told that many are born that way.

Here is our breed standard> https://www.akc.org/breeds/australian_cattle_dog/index.cfm
Tail
The set on of tail is moderately low, following the contours of the sloping croup and of length to reach approximately to the hock. At rest it should hang in a very slight curve. During movement or excitement the tail may be raised, but under no circumstances should any part of the tail be carried past a vertical line drawn through the root. The tail should carry a good brush.

Generally it is a common practice in just a few breeds of dogs.
Dogs like the Doberman and the Rottweiller have their tails docked. Not just in America either....
I guess we continue to follow the tradition that was started when the breed was developed. Both of the above breeds started in Europe, where it is still a very common practice there as well. There has been varied reasons for tail docking in certain breeds of dogs. Some having to do with the desired appearance of the dog, some were from repeated injury of the working dog, etc etc.
If you buy a pure bred dog from a reputable breeder, the tail has been docked before you take it home. If you plan to show your dog at all, they have to meet the breed standard to have a chance.
I have a Rottweiller, and she had her tail docked when she was 2 days old. She doesn't remember having it done and she doesn't seem bothered by the fact that our other two dogs have their tails.
Hope this answers your question.

Its a tradition with certain breeds of working dogs. In the case of herding dogs like the cattle dog or Australian shepherds- it was done to prevents the tail from getting caught in brush while herding livestock. Dobermans and Rottweilers were bred as guard dogs and docking was meant to prevent an intruder from grabbing the dogs tail and pulling it. For the most part the docking is really no longer necessary, and some people do not do it for dogs that are not being worked. However the breeders do continue the tradition- in other words they do it because it has always been done.

Have you ever seen a dog have to have its tail removed as an adult? It is a big surgery and painfull for the dog. Many hunting/working breeds have poor thin tails and they break in the field, or even can break if it hits something in the house. They do not heal well at all and usually have to be removed if they break.

I have seen many dogs with broken tails and I think it is cruel NOT to dock a tail of a working breed. If you are not interested in the truth than just keep on believing the animal rights propaganda and eventually we will not be allowed to have pets at all.

for many reasons

1) all kennel clubs have different standards on certain breeds. Its the same with boxers. In some shows, if the tail is not docked....then they get a DQ

2) Sometimes its for health reasons so the tail must be docked.

3) In the US (and probably other countries) dogs specifically bred to be cattle dogs (rotties, and even corgies) had docked tails because....something about they didnt want the tail to get in the way....Its the same for lots of bull bating dogs

Tails are docked, ears are cropped. in case you purchase from a good, to blame breeder (and till you undertake, it incredibly is the sole opposite direction you will get a canine), then the tails would be docked on the Boxer in accordance to the breed properly-known, because docking is accomplished at ~3 days old, could be accomplished for conformation trials, and that age is basically too youthful to evaluate puppy high quality. Pit bull tails are *no longer* docked. Cropping isn't required for conformation exhibiting, however the final public are nevertheless cropped - it incredibly is accomplished from 8-12 weeks of age, and is in many cases as much as the owner. i do no longer think of it is merciless, as long because it is accomplished authentic, by utilising somebody who's conscious what they are doing - so vets for ears, and the two vets or great breeders for tails. upload: From the UKC information superhighway internet site (the sole respected registry interior the u . s . that acknowledges APBTs): "Disqualification: Bobbed tail."

Honestly, tail docking and ear cropping are for show purposes only. We just had 17 puppies born, boxers.. and we are not docking tails. We had 11 born last year, and people loved them and waited on a list for them, just as much as someone would have had we docked and cropped. .I love my boxers, tails and all ..

Because the waggy tail syndrome they seem to have can hurt when it slaps the **** outta you when you have a larger breed of dog. My dog hits himself in the face with wagging while squinting his eyes wondering what the **** is going on.

I think it's mostly pointless anymore unless your dog is a working dog.
