Both Adam "AND" Eve were given the prohibition. Satan chose Eve as the weaker vessel by nature so he tempted her first and through the female the male fell into disobedience.. Upon eating the "fruit of the knowledge of good and evil" innocence was lost and man and woman had to choose and in the choice comes the dilemma of free Will...
Satan didn't lie completely i.e., Satan said "... Ye shall be as Gods and so we have become and aspire to be as Gods but with a fallen impure nature hence all our decisions are tainted, like attempting to create life i.e., cloning, flying to the Moon, choosing who will live and who will die capital Punishment on and on...

God made a perfect man and woman . no sin and in perfect fellowship with God. He also made the Angels perfect They had every thing they would need or want .There could be no other as perfect a place for man to be. Yet they disobeyed God and were found in sin the free wil lof men and angels. The teaching from God to us in this is that anything no matter how perfect it is it can not be sinnless out side from God becouse we are not God. He is holyness He is purity He is Light the only One that is truely perfect. To enlighten us to our need of His holyness He has writen us examples like this . When you consider the Angels . God created them the Angels perfect also and Satan was one of these created Angels. They all were sinnless perfect as they could be for Angels and Man) . But both of the groups seemed not to have the strenghth to stop from sinning. Even though they were in a perfect enviorment. Satan even more so he was in the presance of God continuely and quite possible saw the creation of the universe and of man. it seems also that the Angles understand the differance of good and evil they proclaim Gods holyness and understand that God has no place for wickedness. So Satan was more accountible to God than Adam but both fell . Point being that no mater how much God does to give His creation a perfect life it seem they will always fall to sin . What this show us is that no other except God is truely perfect and if we want that type of perfection we need God to give us his perfection,,His Holyness. We ( humans) can not do it ourselfs the strenghth is not in us and we are in a sadder state than The Angels or Adam and Eve they were perfect in the start and they could not stay holy now here we are already in sin ,,, if the perfect Adam and Eve and part of the Angles fell how much more do we need God to make us perfect. God is the only Holy being and we need to be like Him. In His time He has said He will no longer talerate sin in His presance. . That is why you see events recorded for us of past events of man kind to teach us so we will understand Him and what our need is .

Well, i'm not a Christian, so sorry if this defeats the purpose of your post.
Personally, i find this is one of the reasons I have problems with Christianity. What kind of God would not want his own children to not know the difference between good and evil? To me that sounds like an overbearing jealous god who wants to keep his subjects brainwashed. Sounds like the Christian church to me. The entire story is a metaphor in the first place, albeit a bad one.

The Garden was so perfect. God gave the instruction to Adam and Eve to protect them. Also they had a choice- to obey God or not. We sometimes wonder why God gave them a choice- why not just make the tree invisible or not create it at all- but that is not God's way. He wants us to have a choice- and to choose Him.
If there is no choice- them we are clones- robots and we have to come to Him of our free will.

it was not just Eve (pbuh), it was forbidden for both Adam and Eve(pbut). and they both disobeyed.
stop blaming Eve now , when Adam was equally a partner in crime.
and if u dont beleive in my words, then read the Quran. it will give u better insights about the incident and also better insights about how a woman has many rights.

I've never understood that myself.
I know in islam the tree wasn't specifically of good and evil but they were ordered not to eat of it because it is would bring them harm.
"O Adam! dwell thou and thy wife in the Garden, and enjoy (its good things) as ye wish: but approach not this tree, or ye run into harm and transgression."
Quran 007.019
and satan decieved them by saying they would live forever and be like angels.
"Then began Satan to whisper suggestions to them, bringing openly before their minds all their shame that was hidden from them (before): he said: "Your Lord only forbade you this tree, lest ye should become angels or such beings as live for ever."
Quran 007.020
so there is no reference to the tree of knowledge of good and evil in islam.

Eve referred to her husband who said that "God said that you must eat ... you must not even look upon it ...will die". They did not die in the literal 24 hr. day. This was a test from GOD on their obeidiance of him. They did however die within the creative day of their existance in order for them to bear children.
