"We need to rid ourselves of the images of starving North Koreans, of Rumanian orphans with Aids, of multitudes in shabby and filthy clothes, of landscapes polluted beyond recognition. That is not what communism was designed to be. That is not what communism is going to be.

Once we reach the true state of communism, we are told, there will not be proverty. There will not be suffering. There will not be differences in the living standards of people. Children will never be hungry. There will not be bonuses for corporate executives. There will no longer be some with spacious home and others homeless. There will no longer be some who cannot afford health care and others who have elective surgery. There will not be people who are disadvantaged.

Nor will there be people who can do as they please."

Corruption on a scale that will make you yearn for the good-old-days of the Chicago Mafia and Capone.

Insanely long lines for simple items like Bread.

No new gadgets or toys (yes, I'm a geek) unless we can steal the plans from another, non-communist country. Coupled with a loss in the ability to build the items we know how to with any real quality.

A "federal police department" with practically no oversight and designs on manipulating the central commitee.

A two-tiered society where party members are treated "more equally than others" (Animal Farm)

Fewer choices in what we buy.

More work, less money.

Lean years where the "5-year Plan" takes precedence over the actuall state of affairs and not enough food is grown or too many of the wrong sized shoes are produced or countless other documented inanities of the former Soviet Union.

Face it, Communism works for ants. Not for people.

I am an American and I live in China. Gosh, these Chinese are really bad guys, they keep me out till early morning at parties, my week-ends are constantly being ruined by going to the beach or traveling to other cities. ( went last week-end to a city about 100 miles away to buy litchi...top of the crop)...the the prices are murder...God, paid 20 cents for 2 pounds of tomatoes! And breakfast cost me almost 16 cents. I had to buy a new shirt and it cost almost $2.00. My apartment is modest, bedroom, living room, dining room, kitchen, two bathrooms and I pay nothing...it is supplied by the company I work for and so is the housing for many other workers. While most of the workers put in 40 hours a week, we often work overtime (without extra pay)...We have cable, DVD, (and the latest movies), HBO, Cinemax, and other channels. I can walk the streets of any city at night without fear and not once have I been asked for ID or even talked with a cop. I go virtually anywhere and have been to army camps and air bases. The only problem that I had was on Mount Everest as I didn't have a permit to climb further than 9,000 feet....It's a rough life....but I wished you could enjoy it too.
