Hi,
If you want to become a professional photographer then you should NOT purchase digital cameras. Digital cameras are easy to use but they have their problems. A digital camera's resolution depends on the amount of pixels it has ... the more ... the higher resolution you end up with.
You must have noticed that film cameras' film is becoming expensive. This is due to the fact that a film camera has no pixel so the resolution is endless and amazing. Professional photographers who are in love with photography do NOT use digital cameras. They don't want to compromise ease with quality.
I hope that helps you!

To "start," a Canon 20D, 30D or Nikon D200 would probably suffice, but the 5D has better resolution. The Canon 1D is what I see many pro's using on press assignments. The Nikon D2X is at the same level as the Canon 5D and is an excellent choice. The full sized sensor in the 5D and 1D is considered an advantage by some, but there are times when the smaller sensor in the Nikons might be seen as an advantage if you like telephoto photography.
Either Nikon or Canon has an extensive range of lenses and other accessories that you will never outgrow. It's largely a matter of personal preference when you get into this price range, so get your hands on an example of each camera and see what you think. In this price range, the decision is not one to be taken lightly. The Rebel is probably not going to suit you for professional use.

* The 350D is a fairly basic model. It's great for most people but it lacks the features (and build quality) for professional applications.
* The 30D is the replacement for the discontinued 20D. It offers more features, better build quality and twice the shutter life.
* The 5D offers a full-frame sensor and more megapixels. Of the models you're considering, this camera has the best image quality. In every other respect however, it's a step below the 20D/30D. It lacks several things that make the 30D superb for general use.
You can read in-depth reviews for these models at http://www.steves-digicams.com/hardware_reviews.html and http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/default.asp?view=alpha
Dpreview also has user forums where you can discuss the pros and cons of each model.
Finally, I agree with Sam to also consider Nikon. The Nikon D80 sits between the Canon 350D and 30D, and the Nikon D200 sits between the Canon 30D and 5D. Both companies make excellent lenses and accessories.
(Sam and I both use a Nikon D200.)
