Cosmic energy always flows through the body, whether you meditate or not. It is the different channels of prana that are responsible for various bodily functions.
Breath control (Pranayama) is a prerequisite to be able to meditate effectively. You must perfect your practice of breath control wherein the rate at which you breath gradually slows down and eventually you stop breathing. This requires a lot of practice and cannot be achieved overnight.
The scientific explanation for being able to achieve a state of breathlessness is that by gradually lowering your breathing rate, you will have eliminated all the carbon dioxide from your body. Your body becomes so full of oxygen that you do not need to breath. With practice, you can stay in this state for longer periods of time.
When you do not breath, it is easier to concentrate on the subject of your meditation.
It is not advisable to attempt Pranayama without professional guidance from a Yoga practitioner.

No, no. This is absolutely wrong to think that by stopping breathing one can bring down the cosmic energy through meditation. Firstly one must know the real meanings of these words - 'meditation' and 'controlled breathing' or 'Pranayama'. The restless mind can be easily calmed down by controlling the breath which is called 'Pranayama'. The controlled breathing helps one to maximise the oxygen in take and minimise the oxygen outlet. During our normal unconscious breathing process we are only utilising 20% of the Oxygen in take, and the remaining 80% oxygen is exhaled for which we have burnt our cells. By long and steady breathing intake we burn less number of our cells and while retaining the breath we minimise the burning of the cells and by slowly and gradually exhaling we are maximising the retention of the Oxygen intake. Once one does this practise under guidance of an adept in Yoga, one gradually does meditation correctly. Meditation is to attain thoughtlessness, which is possible gradually through concentration and withdrawal. The Cosmic energy is already within you but under cover, once you dis-cover it , it gets connected to the cosmos.

just googled non breathing meditation to see what was out there. the way i meditate now is by trying to do absolutely nothing - should include trying as well but it is tricky. i feel that i can let go of body tension better when i don't try to breathe but the body will sooner or later breathe by itself anyway just as in sleep, i prefer no voluntary or controlled breathing. just leave the breath alone or observe what is happening - sometimes there is breathing but not all the time. It is called just sitting or Shikantaza in zen.
