Many reasons. For one, it's what we as a society have been taught to do for generations. for a long time it was in everyones best interest to be as normal as possible. And doing the right thing shows others around you how lazy and socially irresponsible they are and since no one likes to feel that way they will always find a way to make sure that you are the one who is persecuted. Reference, well, just about every truly great person in history. They all went through a period of absolute hell, generally inflicted by the people they were trying hardest to help, before they were able to really shine. Most of us aren't strong enough to take that kind of crap, so we live mediocre lives. So it's up to the ones of us that ARE strong enough to pick up the slack for those who can't. It's exercise in compassion, spiritual training camp, for the real spiritual warriors of the world.

the society we live in fosters a "live in the moment" attitude. i'm sure you've heard that before-- the microwave generation: i want everything and i want it now.
it's a good and bad thing. i believe life is short, and we should work all possibilities as much as we can.. but i also believe in ethics and creating a world that will be even better for the generation. but we can't have both-- either you will live or you will create.
i believe (spiritually) that ppl are more in the moment now than ever before because of a great unconscious sentiment that now are the "end of days". of course every generation since Christ has believed they would see the end of the world, but our generation is special because unlike all other generations, we've advanced lightyears in the course of the last century. 100 years ago, there wasn't any electricity. and that's been the way it was since the beginning of time. now, not only is there electricity, but there's connectivity where i being in america can talk to someone being in japan in an instant. all of our technological advances have created a sense of immediacy, but that coupled with the underlying idea that this is the end of days (you've gotta remember sunday school! lol) makes us want to live out our lives as quickly as possible. no time to waste.
whether it's right or wrong, you be the judge. i think it's important to see the big picture, and to realize that as long as we're alive, we still have a responsibility toward the future...

It is not always easy to think about the "right" thing to do, especially because most people's precepts of morality are based on religious principles (which are often wrong or misapplied) rather than on science, in which few people are adequately trained. Properly, morality is based on evolution -- a concept which applies to societies as well as species. A society which follows practices which are bad from an evolutionary point of view will fail, while good practices will tend toward success. Hence, murder and theft are considered immoral in almost all societies, as they are obviously detrimental to that society. In the USSR, communism failed as a system because its theoretical underpinnings were faulty: they did not recognise that trade creates value, and with trade restricted to state enterprises, the value created by that society fell far behind that created by capitalist societies.

Welcome to the real world dear!As you already percieved it, its not a perfect world.you can not change the universal truth. And that is : For every action you make, There's an equal but opposite reaction to it. You must also realize that what is right thing for you will not be right for others because we have different interpretations of what is right and wrong! So doing the right and just thing in your point of view may affect negatively to others. You cannot avoid hurting someone even though you think you did the right thing. I hope i did not complicated matters with my answer!

Unfortunately we are in the age where anything goes, and people take advantage of it. And there is nothing wrong with doing the right and just thing instead of what pleases us.

I don't know...I tend to consider the welfare of others prior to doing something so it's hard for me to understand people who are always selfish without concern for how their actions would hurt others. I, of course, do mess up sometimes, but it does seem like a lot of people simply don't care about anyone but themselves.

It's that most people in the world today live for themselves and not for others and that they only help themself first before they even think of lifting a finger for another.
