Red - Yes
White - no
Decanters are used to serve red wine because their broad bases provide the oxygen contact needed to release the wine's full bouquet.
There is a new type of serving decanter - it involves a special glass ball that 'aerates' the wine so it can be served in any glass...
'Swishing the wine' - swirling it around so it spreads it out and has a chance to come in contact with the air is a Red wine flavor enhancing technique!
Cheers!

The shape of the glass is important for the fullest enjoyment of the wine because it can enable you to smell the wine ("nose") and contain that aroma within the glass. In addition, a thinner glass has an aesthetic that makes sipping more pleasing. Some wine afficianados are very particular about the size of the glass for specific wines and certain manufacturers make glasses of different sizes and shpaes for reds such as Pinot/Burgundy, Cabernet/Bordeaux, Zinfandel/Chianti, or whites such as Chardonnay/Voignier, Sauvignon Blanc/Riesling. The glasses come with or without stems.
Of course, Champagne glasses have a different shape entirely to make the most of the bubbles that rise from the stem.
Many websites discuss the importance of the glass. The first I have cited has pictures of Riedel glasses, which are an industry standard. The latter two sites discuss shapes and sizes at length. Wine Spectator is a respected reviewer of wines and contains a lot of interesting articles and news. It comes out twice a month.

If you are a true wine lover (most people are not) then the answer is yes. The glasses have been designed to release the smell and flavor of different types of wine in different ways that make it just a little better. Example. a very dry wine should keep its scent down so not to offend as you put it under your nose to take a drink. A sweet wine in the opposite. Wine changes with the amount of air hitting the exposed wine. That is why some are more round and short.

I have heard that this is true because firstly, the wine needs to breathe while it is in the glass. A larger glass means more of the wine is in contact with the air and so this helps to wine to "breathe". Another important (apparently) thing is that the glass should be large enough for your nose to be able to smell the fragrance coming off the wine as you drink it. This contributes to the overall experience of enjoying a good wine.

This is all just a marketing gimmick.
The French have different glasses for different wines, supposedly to bring out the best from each type of wine. You have glasses specificaly for Bordeauxs, Merlots, Chardonnays, etc.
If you look back, the traditional Italian wine glass is like a shooter glass on a short stem. In Germany, they used to drink wine from ceramic cups. You should try ceramic, as they bring out something different from the glass.

Absolutely true. Different wines are best with different glasses because some wines such as cabernet do better with more surface area hitting the air and fragrances being released into the nose. Champagne does not need much fragrance released, that is why the champagne glass is so tall and narrow.

I've been told that your body temperature will change the temperature of the liquid if the shape is formed in a way that your fingers get close to the wine. well whatever.
