The person wanting to commit suicide is the selfish one. They aren't thinking past the end of their own nose. Suicide invalidates so much of their parent's lives, the pain they're causing by their action can never be gotten over by those they leave behind. It is the total definition of selfish.
Them, not you.

I have a couple of friends who are step parents to kids whose parents committed suicide. I also know parents of a kid who killed herself. There is not a thing you can do to screw up your children more than to take your own life. They will blame themselves for your selfish action. There isn't a thing you can do that is more selfish than to take your own life. Those who do so are copping out on life. Living life well is the best thing a person can learn to do. It isn't easy and doesn't come naturally.
What is it you need that you have to give less than what you are taking? If you are feeling down and out, give of yourself to someone. There is a great story about Patch Adams who was born into wealth and spent all of his time contemplating suicide and drepression. Until, that is, he figured out that the key to living life free of depression was to focus on others - so he went to medical school and runs a clinic where health care is dispensed to all who come. Robin Williams starred in a movie named Patch Adams. Great story on overcoming depression.

Actually, the person who is thinking of committing suicide doesn't think about the repercussions of his or her actions. Most people who contemplate suicide don't realize that there's natural order to life.
When people think about taking their lives, they assume that everything in their body is just inanimate or without feeling. When you cease to live, all your bodily organs die. Most people though just think they're like computer components than anything actually alive.
The body is like a Company. When the company dies, all the employees are without work. When a person decides to just commit suicide, that's like terminating the existence of a company putting a whole bunch of employees out of work.
The Planet is like a Human Body. Imagine if the Planet just decided to commit suicide. What would happen to all the living things on the Planet? They won't have much of a say. They're just forced to submit.
When someone thinks about committing suicide, it's a waste of corporate resources from a business perspective. Don't forget the work and struggle for all those living cells that went into creating that human being.
When someone just feels like committing suicide, they don't think about the struggle of the sperm that came from the father to get to that ovum beating out 220 million sperm. I know it sounds stupid, but imagine if you were a sperm or some endeavor where you put in all that work only to have it all destroyed.
I may sound melodramatic, but that's what happens when people just decide to throw their lives away like that. Look at all the people who are born without limbs, stricken with Downs Syndrome, or have Cancer.
I went to visit the mother in law of one of my cousins the other day who just had surgery because of Cancer. She's in her 60s and she's worried about terminal illness because she wants to live. People who want to commit suicide are just throwing life away.
So when it comes to who's being selfish, I think you have the least to worry about.

In reality, you are being selfish. You are trying to change somone eles's own free will. They should beable to live their life the way they want right? That's why were fighting over in the middle east, and everywhere else as far as that goes. Now throw love for life, and compassion in, you deffinately need to help them out. Think about it. Could you really sleep at night, knowing that there might have been somthing you could have done or said to help that person from taking their life.

NO! You are not being selfish. Whatever that person told you it's not true! For we all know what precious a gift life is. He/she must use it wisely. Life is a rollercoaster of trials, sufferings and happenings. Pray do everything in your power to prevent a wronged decision. But don't force him/her. Show that person how great life his, how precious. Good luck.

In all honestly, I believe that for some people committing suicide is better then the hell they are going through.
But if they were really serrious about doing it, they would have not conacted anyone.
In that case they are looking for sympathy. Call me selfish but I have a brother who gets drunk and threatens to kill himself with a loaded gun.
Who do they call? The call me at all hours of the night, and I am suppose to be there when all the police cars an ambulance are there.
They then haul him down to a hospital who deals with depression, and the next morning he is sobber and they send him home.
I have gotten calls at hours of the night. And have had to driven far, it got to be really sickening.
if he wanted to die he would have killed himself without telling anyone. To most people its a game to get attention.
One time he was released in the morning, someone drove him back to town. He called from a pay phone saying he was going to kill himself and no one could find him.
I had a daughter who was one at the time and a single mother who worked. But yet I was expected to go search for him all over town to make sure he was alive.
Imagine waking your daughter up at two in the morning because the police call you and say meet us at his place. It is a game. and he has cried wolf for the last time in my eyes
. If a person wanted to comitte suicide they would not tell anyone. They are looking for attention. People who call someone saying they are going to comitte suicide, it is nothing but a game of sympathy.
Now this would be selfish. If you saw someone laying on the floor screaming for help and you ignored them
. My parents divorced and my father had an apt. he fell in front of his door one nite. It was late. Everyone in the building was asleep.
This women came home and saw him laying their asking for help, and she walked over him and did not call 911 or get help.
He was having at heart attack and she walked over him without saying anything or getting him help. then she bragged to the neighbors how she saw him on the floor alive asking for help and she did nothing.
Now that is what you call selfish....It has been 15 years, and I see this women often, she is not playing with a full deck.
I want to haul off and slap her and tell her just what I think... But I have held back. I guess it was time for my father to leave this earth.
If someone really wants to die, if you have another phone call 911 and let them deal with it.

It would be best to provide them with the easiest means of ending their life, such as a large caliber firearm.
