Pay it....

Library fines don't usually get that large. Did you ever return the books? After a certain amount of time, most libraries will stop charging you late fines and simply charge you for the cost of replacing the book. (At least every library that I've ever know about has done it that way.)

Of course, as other people have said, you could always pay the fine.

If you still have the book(s) out, RETURN THEM asap, so the fine will stop. If you lost the books, pay for them. If you've already returned the books, you're stuck for the fine, so figure out a payment schedule if you don't have all the money right now. Tell the librarians that you intend to pay but it will take you awhile to get it all paid off.

Once you're settled up with them, watch your due dates in the future so this doesn't happen again. Also, as soon as you determine that you may have lost a book, TELL them at the circulation desk. Telling them promptly may stop your fine from accumulating. Also paying for the book promptly will definitely stop your fine from growing any bigger. Many libraries don't let the amount of fines go beyond the value of the book. If you pay for a book, then find it, they may give a refund. We did in my library.

Most libraries have a special day, and I can't think of the big word used to describe this day to save my life, but it's basically "Spring Cleaning Day." Once or twice a year, anyone can return anything to the library no matter how overdue and the fines will be removed, no questions asked. Keep your ears open. If your library has a newsletter, check that periodically, or you might hear about it in the local newspaper.

Talk with the librarian and explain that you've managed to rack up this huge fine that you don't really have the money to pay, but you want to be able to continue using the library, and tell her that you have say 40 bucks. She'll probably work with you and let you make payments or settle for the $40. I did this once at a video store I had big late fees for and it worked. Worth a try!

Some libraries let you do this thing where you clean everything off your record. All the fines all the lost books, if you've already returned everything that was late then ask about it. I think it's calles a record clean-up and you can only do it once.

You should pay if you want to keep your library card. If you don't care about the library card, just wait for the bill.

talk to the library about paying it in installments. If they won't let you do that, tell them you will take a while to pay it off, an save up to pay it.

I hope this helps!

I would suggest that you either offer to buy the book, cease going to that library or stop whining and pay the fine.

Pay it or try to strike a deal with them. Don't blow it off. I had a library fine go on my collections report and it was a pain in the **** to get off.
