I was in Rome this Spring and I can say that they dress impeccable! I saw a lot of boots and slacks and leather jackets! Their hair always styled to perfection and a great handbag to compliment the look. I didn't see any hats at all. But the one thing I did see alot of were the sunglasses. They are crazy about these sunglasses that are squared and the legs are like these elongated triangles. Explaining them would do no good. You would have to see them to know. Ohhhh yes, and the boots were a must. All high healed of course. But definitely in all colors!

No matter what class, women in Italy will always dress as well as possible as that is the ultimate reflection of who someone is-in Italian society, the way you dress reflects who you are and how you see yourself. The age range is large, but in general:
Hats are not worn. Instead your hair should be dried before leaving the house, and carefully styled. Usually it is worn down, as it is more feminine and flattering that way. Coats or jackets are generally worn , and they are mid thigh to knee length, in solids, cream, navy, gray, forest green or black, generally in wool because it can be chilly. Gloves are brown or black leather, while scarves come in a variety of colors and are usually one of the twists that Italian women make on their outfits to transform them from the mundane to the extraordinary. Boots are worn, in brown or black leather, generally with pointy toes, and are made of leather. Slacks are usually worn, but they are only flat fronted, made of wool, in classic solids. Purses are leather, in classic shapes with interesting colors, with zipper tops. Shirts and sweaters are cotton or cashmere or wool, form fitting and well cut-never wrinkled.

first at all: Italians don't wear hats (unless it's a particular fashion of the moment..) in fact the first way to find strangers in Italy is looking for not fashion(in Italy) hats, straw hat...http://www.comonight.com/index.php?cella=fotogallery/show.php&gallery=109&id=5730
it's a big age range, it's really different... but the most important thing are coulors: white, black anc pastel colours, monocromatic and coordinated ( not green jeans and pink shirt...)...
