If your ancestors imigrated from Scandinavian countries Dal - or for easy speaking in the U.S they changed into Dale - means valley.

Well, Dale means a bushy vale; low ground, with ground ascending around it. So your ancesters lived in a dale and got known as the people from the dale which over time shortened to Dale. Alot of last names are just locations or occupations.
