Basic Input Operating System

It's the first set of instructions your computer sees when it's turned on. It gives the computer instructions about what kind of hard drive and how large is is and where your operating system is. Among other things.
It is kept in memory along with the computers clock by a battery.

The primary function of BIOS is to prepare the machine so other software programs stored on various media can load, execute, and assume control of the computer. This process is known as booting up.
