We have a housecat, 3 yr old and a 7 yr old child. We have a nice, fenced, landscaped back yard. We want an indoor/outdoor short haired, smaller breed that wont desroy our home and garden or try to escape everytime we open the door.
We know we seem picky but we believe better safe than sorry...for both us and the dog. Was thinking of a malti-poo or some sort of poodle mix.

Poodle mixes do not have short hair. Lots of grooming.
Check out the AKC (American Kennel Club) website and start researching some REAL breeds. There's no problem with mutts but most of those poo mixes are found at petstores.. and are bred in horrible conditions. Please don't get a dog at a petstore. Go online and do some research about puppy mills.
You will also need to train your dog. If you don't have enough time in your schedule to take your dog to classes for an hour a week for about 8 weeks, you are not ready to bring a dog into your home. Very often the whole family can attend classes. It's a great way to get everyone involved with the care of the dog.
Try www.dogbreedinfo.com and look at lots of breeds. Talk to breeders. There's lots of info out there. Try joining a dog fanciers forum online... and talk to people who know their stuff, not random people who don't know much about dogs on Yahoo.
Border Terriers are a wonderful, smaller breed with minimal coat care. As terriers go, they are much more laid back than many.
Please, please, do lots of research. Find some obedience professionals in your area and talk to them about different breeds of dogs. Go to a dogshow and scope some out. Your pet is not a decision to take lightly.

****Pomeranians have lots of hair. Chihuahuas can be very high energy.. toy dogs do not necessarily do well with children (both poms and chis are toys) Lhasa Apsos have long hair... lots of grooming.

Dachshund are easy to train and are lovable little dogs but they do require a lot of time and attention because they love to be with you. they are also good traveling pets.
