I am really stressing over this! The instructions for my essay are: 1) Choose a topic from your own knowledge and experience 2) Use specific examples to show what you mean.
I am having to rewrite it because i used facts from research to support my viewpoints and thesis; they said it wasn't 'enough about me' . I don't understand this style they want me to write in. Can anyone help? 8-/ I don't like to write without facts because it seems like emotional writing, which I have learned to be ineffective writing, or propaghanda. I guess I am a little confused....

I tend to be an over achiever, or, morelike, I sometimes make things much more complicated than they should be. I wanted to make this essay political, because I have a lot of opinions in that area and know a lot about the subject- naturally I would rather write about that! Omitting the facts will just make for a weak paper! :( (in my opinion) I just need practice with this style of writing... I think I understand now, thanks to your answers. If anyone has any examples on the internet I would really appreciate you posting the links! :D

There are different types of writitng and your teacher wants you to know them. That is why this assignment is what it is - if it were expository - you could use facts; if it were persuasive, you could use facts and ideas, etc.
I am an English teacher and I think for this assignment the teacher wants you to work only from your memory and it is good to know how to.
You did not specify your assignment or topic - but for example say you are writing about how a rocket is propelled. Desribe how the engine forces air downward and it forces the rocket upward overcoming gravity - you don't have to know what rocket fuel is made of, or how many pounds of thrust there are. Just use YOUR knowledge that you already have.
The point in this assignment is to write in this style - not to have all the facts. I know it is different.
So... you have a topic. Use the best examples you can think of and use them - do not pick up a book or use the internet. Write it from your background knowledge and it will be sufficient - and what the teacher wants. It becomes about you - write the paper the way you would but use only your knowledge store. The teacher may just want to measure student's background knowledge. We do that often so we know what the students know and where to start teaching - you see? Especially at the beginning of the year.
It is kind of an easier assignment - because you start already having the information.
You are great to care enough to write and ask. If you want to ask more write me at rkirby1331@yahoo.com

Thanks

Seems to me that they want you to write from your own experience - and that means describing or telling something you know first hand. It could be something as simple as how you first learned when bath water was just right or too hot. Maybe you had trouble dealing with someone moving away and out of your life - write about how you felt at the time, and perhaps what you learned about yourself after some time had passed. Try going at it as though they're asking you to describe how you experienced a learning process - beginning to end. There would be no reference books to pull from - this would be YOUR experience, and I think that would satisfy the requirement.

This is an excercise in experience. Write something that YOU know about. Simple examples would be; making a dinner from start to finish, tuning up or detailing your car. We had this same assignment. I did mine on cleaning a VCR since I've always been into electronics before going to school for computers; made it detailed yet easy to understand and stated examples of VCRs that people thought were bad but were just too dirty to play, etc. Got a perfect score on it... have to admit it was hard to stretch out 3 pages on this VCR cleaning though.

Stop stressing, you are obviously a great student. Use your imagination and stick to the topic. If the teacher wants a paper based on you own experiences, just give in graciously. It's only one paper, and you'll have plenty of time to write many more after doing research.

There must be some subject you know a lot about from your experience. A hobby, perhaps. A special interest of yours. An experience. A place you went on vacation. This assignment isn't about looking up stuff. It's about you and your life and your experiences, so write about that. You can give facts about yourself without having to look it up.

Write about something you know about, something that you like. How about how to write a research paper ;-)? Your instructor wants you to express what you know now, not what you are going to learn! Good luck!

Maybe you should write about something that happened to you, instead of something you read about.

You're still writing about facts, but their personal experiences.

Good luck with this. Writing can be fun.

Maybe u can use ur research to show a point, then use ur own experience to further prove ur pt. I found it effective cuz it is based on ur research, yet it is proven by ur exp.

they want you to write about something that you have personally experienced and know about.. such as how to make your bed, or how to cook egg omeletes... something you've done personally and know how to do and they want you to write about it... and they want you to be specific enough that the reader will believe you know what your talking about... so yes...do emotional writing... write about your passion for something that you know your good at..
