To be on the safe side allow up to 24 hours after the substance it is in (blood, saliva, semen etc) has dried out.

HIV does not live outside the body very long at all, contrary to this is Hepatitis B which can live outside the body in droplets and partially dried blood up to several hours.

Oxygen is actually toxic to the virus.
I remember back in the 80's they calculated that it only lasted 3 seconds. But if it is in a drop of blood, it will last until the cells in that drop of blood are all DEAD.
