Visine is not recommended by eye doctors because (like said above) it contains chemicals that contrict your blood vessels - making it appear that your eyes are less red. Over time this chemical can cause rebound redness which is often worse than the eyes were before.
Other drops that are great are systane and refresh tears. These and the drops mentioned above are perfectly safe for continuous use as often as you like.

As a lifetime pot smoker, I have used a Vistne type drop off and on for like 30 years and I can see pretty well for my age but who knows? This info has once more made me mentally swear off Visine stuff and use "tears". Also in my hippie past, I have made a tea with golden seal, filtered it and it feels great, and is very healing to the eye membrainy things. .

There could be another underlying cause for your dry eyes. Make an appointment with your Eye Doctor or Optometrist.
Make an appointment with your regular Primary Care Physician. Get checked for Diabetes, Heart Disease, Cholesterol, Dehydration & High Blood Pressure. These all could be causing your dry eyes!

You should see optometrist or ophthalmologist to find out what the underlying cause might be and then follow his/her directions. If they include taking eyedrops make them. But don't continue to take them on your own without checking with someone.

I had been using "Clear Eyes" or "Visine" for years.
A couple of years ago, during a physical exam, I had mentioned this to the eye doctor (ophthalmologist).
He told me to stop using those because they can be harmful to the eyes and just use any eye drops that has "Tears" or "Artificial Tears" or "Lubricating Eye Drops" in the description...for example "Murine Tears" eye drops because they have the natural lubricant you need to relieve the dryness.
Apparently, there is a certain chemical or decongestant that shrink blood vessels and thus "gets the red out" in the Clear Eyes and Visine that is NOT in the "Tears" formulas that could turn out to be harmful.
As an example:
"Murine Tears are lubricant eye drops. This natural tears formula contains 6 of the 11 major ingredients found in natural tears. This helps to relieve dryness of the eye and protects against futher irritation."

it shouldnt be too bad. Only use them in a serious case of dry eye. Just whatever you do, dont use Renu eyedrops...they have been repo'd and the worst case scenarios are people going blind.
