At 17, emotions are all over the place. Highs and lows are common. Track your emotions in a journal or calender for awhile and see if there is a pattern--kind of like PMS symptoms.
Are you eating well and getting enough sleep and exercise and are you healthy otherwise? Do you have any physical symptoms besides the depression?
Bi-polar is quite common and easily controlled. If you continue with excessive highs and lows, I'd suggest you see your physician to make sure there aren't other things going on. When you start to feel the depression starting, get out and go for a walk or a bike ride. Exercise is the best thing you could do. The worst thing to do is sit and dwell on how you are feeling
And, don't worry about discussing what's going on with your parents. If you are close to them and can talk things over, tell them of your worry and concerns. They can help you. They'd worry more seeing you sad and depressed, wondering what was happening to you, imaging things probably far worse than they really are.
Depression is such a common thing these days and it can be treated relatively easily so don't hesitate to talk with someone that can help you figure this out. Good luck.

there are a lot of hormones surging through your body right now, as with all kids your age, I remember how crazy and mixed up I felt at that age, and it's got to be worse for a girl, I really dont know much about bi-polar conditions, but you are probably just feeling the same things that a lot of your peers are feeling, I think a lot of people are just throwing these Dr. Phil terms around these days , when you are just experiencing the same things that teenagers have felt for eons. If you are really concerned about it, ask you councilor if they have some suggestions, or maybee a pastor or someone like that that you can trust and will keep things confidential. unfortunatly, since you are are minor still, lots of people who might be able to help you, may need your parents permission to even talk to you, It is hard to find a freind when you are still a minor, sometimes.

Most 17 year olds have wide mood swings. This is called "being a teenager". Totally normal and due to high hormone levels. Ignore what other people say about you and just live your own life while trying to be the best person you can. The mood swings will level off as you age and become more mature. Have fun and enjoy being a young person. Ignore anyone trying to bring you down or hurt your feelings.

The best thing you could do is talk to the parents you claim not to want to worry. I am on mood meds myself and am a helluva alot happier than I was before I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia. It causes depression so I got on medication. And if you are perfectly heatlhy, you want to know! Don't let some dumbass girl upset you. Hey, but if she lead you to your answers now, it would save you years of "not knowing".
Do you go off into a blank stare? My mama does and she's bipolar.
Do you have obsessive thoughts or actions? Mama is a shopaholic.
I wish you the best. And never fear the truth! You could only hope to come to the greater truth about yourself! And the earlier the better. I spent years angry and medication could have helped me way back then.
I urge you and anyone who think they have something this serious wrong...seek help. Your family doctor can help. You don't always have to go to a psycologist now-a-days.

I am bipolar! I would also like to tell you that over 75% of us are bipolar. Medication can help, but the main the that will help you is realizing it, admitting to it, and doing your best to control it. If you look up the cure for bipolar the one thing it will mainly say is meditation (imagining you are some where you have always want to be and taking your mind away from the place you do not want to be). Your freind who had made the comment about you being bipolar is most likely biploar themself.

You could be bi-polar, or your hormones could be out of wack. Seriously, we thought that was what was wrong with my sister when she was your age, and she went to the doc and did some tests and found out that her hormones were seriously out of balance. yeah she was put on medication but it wasn't anti-depressents, it was just something to calm her system down. shes not on medication anymore and shes totally fine. At that age, some of us women have that problem (for most of us it occurs only a few days out of a month) but for others we're not totally in sync yet. I wouldn't say you were bi-polar, but go talk to your doc or something. Dont worry about your parents, they love you no matter what. If your worried that your having bad mood swings, they probably know about it already (duh, your a teenager) and they'll think youre a responsible adult for wanting to get something done about it (even just bringing it up and talking about it will be better than doing nothing. Its nothing you need to hide).
