I am looking to buy a new vehicle. I don't like small cars and can't afford the gas for a SUV. Any ideas on something in between would be HUGHLY appreciated.

Either a Honda Accord or a Toyota Camry. Both are mid-size, reliable, stylish, and fuel-efficient. And they have great resale value (or will last a LONG time if you would rather keep a car until it's dead!). Ford Fusion, Ford 500, Mercury Milan, Mercury Montego, Lincoln Zephyer, and finally the Mazda 6 all of these are great cars

voltswagon is very cheap on gas and gets good gas millage as well to . in my opion?
