I just inherited a 6-week old kitten, and while I am not opposed to taking her to the vet I can't get her in for a few more days. She has terribly goopy eyes and raspy breath. I had a kitten once before with this same ailment and the vet said it was an URI, and prescriped an antibiotic. I am just wondering if anyone knows any herbs or holistic ways to help her (and me!) out.

Actually, the antibiotics won't help the sickness she has, it will only prevent bacteria from infecting her while her system is weak from fighting off the cold. So there is really no reason she needs the antibiotic at all.
If you have a humidifier, turn it on for her or consider turning the hot water tap on and letting her breath the steam. That will loosen the gunk in her lungs in airways.
Use a warm cloth to gently wipe off the eye goo. The warm on her sinuses will help loosen the gunk in there too.
Feed her water with a baby's medicine shooter (or eyedropper). Get some canned kitten food or meat baby food and add water until it is liquid and give that to her in the medicine shooter as well.
Human drugs for colds are poison to cats don't give any of those. I'm not familiar enough with herbs to give advise on those, but this is what we do for sick kitties in the clinic and the SPCA. Supportive care is best, plus rest and some TLC and she should be better in a week or 2. Good luck and hope this helps.

Just like humans there are a lot of ailments a kitten can catch. Due to this fact the only advice I can give you is to take it to the vet immediately. Kittens are very suseptable to illness and their immune system isn't as strong as an adult cats making any infection in their sinuses and lungs very dangerous.
If it is a financial difficulty that keeps you from taking her in call around and see is a vet will take a post dated check or payments, there are still a lot of vets that do this.
I have done animal rescue for over 10 years from local and not so local pounds and animal shelters. I have worked with many vets - the longer you wait the worse it can get for your kitten, especially if she is having a hard time breathing.
Do not give your kitten any herbal remedies, they do not have the same reactions to medications as humans and it could result in death.

Use warm water on a cotton swab to cleanse her eyes, wipe from the inside out and only use the cotton ball once.

Some saline solution (1tsp to half a litre of warm water and let it cool) dropped in her nose will help clear the nostrils. Vicks (chest rub) held under her nose will help (don't get it on the cat).

Some L-lysine and nutritional vitamin supplements will help her immune system fight off the infection. A couple of drops of orange or lemon juice (she won't like it they hate the smell and she will drool and spit and carry on) will also help as it's necessary for healing.

You can't cure the kitten, the above will help alleviate the symptoms. The vet can prescribe Acyclovir which is an anti viral medication and this is the most effective form of treatment. The kitten can die from the flu so get it there ASAP.

It might not be a "cold", but pnumenitious, a fatal ailment in kittens. It causes brain swelling quite quickly but is easy to treat with antibiotics. It's *really* contagious too. The cat sneezes wet infected mucus, the goopy eyes but not the raspy resperation.
Good luck.

Of course my first comment, get her to the vet ASAP. If she does in fact have an upper respiratory infection, put her in the bathroom with you when you shower so she can get a "steam" treatment. (Do not let her get in the shower) Keep her eyes clean with a warm washcloth and make sure her nostrils are also clear and clean. Keep her warm. Other than than I can be of no help what so ever in suggesting any holistic treatments. Make sure she is eating and drinking. Dehydration will complicate matters.

Do not give her any human medicine especially NO ASPIRIN, without your vets approval.

Good luck.
