You are lost. This is one reason that I don't lie to my children and tell them that there is a Santa Clause, that there is a tooth fairy, that there is a Easter bunny, and the list goes on. Because all of these things are not real. But God is real, very real!! If you tell your kids that these things are real and God is real too, when they find out the truth that they aren't real, then they just might assume you lied to them about God. I understand you better than you think I do, but you could never understand the love I have for My existing God, and he does exist. Maybe someday soon you will come to realize that God loves you and he wants you. Have a nice day.

Pardon me, but I have never met a kind atheist who is willing to listen. Also, the tooth fairy analogy is kind of floppy. If I were one of the tenth of the population that didn't believe in the tooth fairy, I wouldn't go around calling everyone who did puerile idiots - I would calmly try to explain to them that the tooth fairy doesn't come.
Anyway, there is so much more evidence for the existence of God than for the existence of the tooth fairy that the analogy doesn't cut it.

Im not bitter because of our opposing viewpoints on God. If anything I can understand why some of you feel the way you do. Especially with the stories people have told me involving hypocritical, forced, encounters.I think everyone is guilty of stereotpying no matter how "righteous" they may claim to be. We all have preconceived notions about people that we dont understand. Usually when people find out Im a christian they get this Deer caught in the headlights look because they think Im going to preach fire and brimstone sermons all night. Not so. I just think its disappointing that some people are missing out on great relationships because of misunderstandings. Ok talked enough-sorry

C.S. Lewis was an athiest and a very well-educated man. He spent much of his life disputing the Christian faith. Why don't you read some of his books? He eventually converted to Christianity, and has well-though out reasons for doing so.

I have held many conversations concerning this topic, and I feel that I understand where an athiest is coming from very well.

Athiest- If there was a God, why would he let such terrible things happen to people?
Believer-God gives everyone a free will. If you ask for his help, he will help you with life's struggles, even if only to give you peace. Bad things happen as a result of bad people...period.

Athiest- If God exists-Why doesn't he just show himself and remove all doubt?
Believer- It says in the bible that the Lord is so-much feared that people can not even look in his face. Mumbo jumbo? I think not. Think about how crazy people act towards celebrities. If you were face to face with your creator, you would be in so much shock and awe that you would quake with fear. He wouldn't want to do that to people. Besides, Jesus was among the people for 30 some years, doing miracles. People would come up with some scientific explanation if God gave us some drastic sign today.

Athiest-How can you believe something without cold, hard, scientific proof?
Believer-There are many, many scientists who have found evidence to support things such as the Great Flood and Creation. Look for the videos...you can't say you believe something until you have researched all angles, even if you are believing in nothing.

Athiest-Why give up your individuality to obey someone you've never even met that could be fictional?
Believer-Because, if you follow the Commandments of the bible, you will lead a happier life because of it. Think about it-Thou shalt not commit adultery...how many children are sad because their fathers have too many kids from many different women? The average man could never support 6 kids from 4 different women and have the time to build a relationship with them. Following God doesn't restrict you, it protects you.

Of course, the questions go on and on...and as a believer, even I have asked them from time to time. But, the biggest question that you have to ask yourself is, why is this so important to you? Why do you dwell on it? Maybe your soul is searching for something that your brain doesn't know about. Even if you spent your whole life believing in God, had a happy family, and led an honest life, then died and never woke up...what would you have to lose? God loves you whether you know it or not, and he doesn't want to lose even one single person. But He has given you the choice.

the tooth fairy comparison is dead on.

I was a born again xian and struggled to reconcile my faith with reason. I have come to see religious faith - beliefe despite lack of evidence - as a detriment to individuals and societies.

I am not sure about all atheists, esp a few I have seen post here, but this atheist understands xians very well. I understand enough to know that John (above) is just fooling himself. if you need proof, then your faith isn't strong (good) enough. read your bible (pronounced buy-bull).

I will check your sources, John, but I expect to find further misunderstanding/misrepresentation/misapplication of science. if whatever your sites say is scientifically valid, then it would have been peer-approved. that's what makes it science - rigorous testing and more testing.

[just checked - wow. what a piece of work - I can't even begin to enumerate the problems with it. just too d@mn late.]

loveydovey - we are not lost, we are FREE.

You've obviously had a rough time with Christians and I'm sorry this is so. Personally I have no problem with atheists. Nor with Muslims, hindus, agnostics,
I am a Christian. I beleive what I beleive. If it isn't what you beleive then that is not a problem to me. The bible says we should all be 'fully persuaded in our own mind'. It also says that God would rather we were 'hot or cold'. Either for or against him fully. Then it is clear where we stand. He can't stand these fake Christians who say one thing and do antoher. But those who choose not to beleive in him, he has no problems with that.
God gave everyone free will choice. In your case, you choose not to beleive. You choose something else. So where I say God you might say something different. Good for you. But the truth of free will choice is the same no matter what you beleive. It is your right as a human being to make up your own mind what you do and do not beleive and to enjoy the right to make that choice.
And to all Christians, athiests, agnostics, muslims, hindus, etc out there let me say it is about time we all stopped fighting over our rights to beleive and not beleive. I don't try to force people to my opinion. I do answer questions here based on my beleifs in the understanding that my answers may give light, comfot, understanding or wisdom to others. Even if that wisdom etc is actually the opposite of what I beleive because the greater truth is that all men have the right to decide for themselves what they will or will not beleive. They also have the right to accept all consequences for their beleifs and actions. All men have the right to defend their homes, lives and loved ones, but they do not have the right to destory one anothers homes, lives or loved ones.We are all made to be free. Not to destroy but to build up.
Lets try thinking how to consider each other and build up one another instead of all the bickering. And lets have respect for each other. This is supposed to be a civil place of sharing and enlightenment, not a free for all on political and religious slander and persecution.

I'm not really Christian, and I am insulted. I am beginning to think that most Atheists don't understand, or even try. a lot of Christians don't understand Atheist, but I think that's because of how zealous BOTH sides are. I do think a lot of the questions from Atheists, at least on Yahoo! Answers, are bitter. I know not everyone is like that, but still...

You never hear from the people with any sense on either side. The idiots who give both sides bad reputations never shut the hell up about how what they think is right, and if you disagree, you're wrong. Not giving a damn is the side i'm on.
