reboot more often and don't run so many progs.
If your system has to rely too heavily on virtual memory, you will notice a significant performance drop. The key is to have enough RAM to handle everything you tend to work on simultaneously. Then, the only time you "feel" the slowness of virtual memory is in the slight pause that occurs when you change tasks. When you have enough RAM for your needs, virtual memory works beautifully. When you don't, the operating system has to constantly swap information back and forth between RAM and the hard disk. This is called thrashing, and it can make your computer feel incredibly slow

I'm not really sure how to explain virtual memory. From what I understand, the more applications you have active at once, the more virtual memory is used. When it is at 100% usage, your comp will be locked up or moving so slow you'll just want to turn it off. Programs that generally have high demands of virtual memory are programs that use advanced 3D, DVD apps, and other things like that. If your virtual memory is running low, you need to close out some programs. In the lower left of your screen you should see some icons most of those are non-neccessary. right-click on them and click exit or the equivalent, that should free up some virtual memory.

Virtual memory is what windows uses to run more programs actively and give you quicker response
To increase the size of usage of virtual memory, follow these steps:
1. Right click on My computer and select Properties
2. Select the Advanced Tab and click on the Settings button in the Performance tab
3. Select the Advanced tab and go to the third tab called Virtual Memory.
4. Click on change
5. Select custom size and set min to 756 and max to 1512 (these are my settings)
6. Click ok all the way.
Your virtual memory has increased now!

Virtual memory is a space set aside on your harddrive for file swapping...the less physical memory you have (memory Sticks) the more the computer has to use the harddrive...This is not only slow, but eats up harddrive space....Put as much Memory (sticks that go into the motherboard) into the motherboard as it allows for...Mine for example has to slots and a total possible of 2 gbs...so that mean's installing a 1 gb memory stick X 2....or, you could just run 2 512mbs sticks for a total of 1gb of memory...
In general, the more (Physical) memory the better.

Virtual memeory is memory that is available when your computer is on, it is used when you copy somthing to paste, you will often get a message if you want keep it in clipboard, this vitual memory that keeps it there, because when you turn off the computer it is not there anymore. This memeory allows you ta access different programs at the same time. You should find a good book on you system and there will other great ways of tweaking your computer

It is exactly as Mel said, but before you go into debt buying extra memory, check and make sure that you haven't picked up a virus, spyware or malware program like a Trojan horse. When a Trojan horse replicates, it will use up system resourses to place itself all over the computer. If you have a virus, and you cannot get it off, you will then have to have your hard drive erased and have all of your programs reloaded.
