I tell you, I get more compliments when I do my own hair on the color it turns out than I do when I get it professionally done. It's just a pain to do it on my own, but it is definitely worth it to save the money. I do get it professionally colored a couple times per year when I go in for a haircut (to treat myself). But for the most part, L'oreal or Miss Clairol are my hair colorers!!!!

Over the counter color that you find in drug stores, like "box" color is a metallic dye that destroys the hair over time, frying it. Salon color is formulated with smaller molcules to work better, and with out metal in it. Kinda like perscription drugs versus OTC medication.Bottom line, if you cannot go to a salon for color, go to a "beauty supply store" like SALLY'S BEAUTY SUPPLY or some where like that. It's just as affordable and much more professional. It will also save your hair from frying out!

I also color my own hair. Mostly to cover the gray. I can't afford to go to a professional beauty salon-so I usually buy what is on sale at the store. I have highlighted it myself as well and I like the results. I also cut my hair myself. It would probably look better if I went to a salon for the cut so that they would get it even on the back-then again there is the cost. My hair is pretty forgiving so I can get away with quite a bit. Then I am very careful about the shampoo and conditioner that I buy and use. I get the ones for colored hair and I make sure I deep condition after coloring.

I get my done at a salon. Every 6 weeks or so, I get a color, highlight, lowlight, and cut. I would never use any over the counter hair color on myself....they are all horrible on your hair, your hair will be in much better condition if a stylist colors it....also, a stylist can make sure to get everything colored correctly, most people, who color their own hair really don't even know what they are doing.

I do it myself because what you buy in a box is the same chemicals you get in a salon. You also have better control over how much hair gets dyed, and how long you leave it one for the color results. I highlight mine, and when I've had it done at a salon, they do so much of my hair, they might as well have dyed the whole of it. I like being able to spend $8 every 6 weeks instead of $30 every six weeks, but I guess I'm cheap like that :-)

I basically agree with you.

Except that I leave my hair its natural color. That way, I don't have to worry about needing touch-ups or anything.

And I even cut my own hair, and I have since high school. (There is a way to get automatic layers using a one-cut method with a rubber band. But if one wants a blunt cut or some other style, then this obviously won't work.)

Weirdly enough, now that I'm getting old and my face isn't so pretty any more, people say that my hair is my best feature!

I color mine at home and have never gone to a salon. I like L'Oreal Fiera. It adds some nice highlights. My Mom always goes to a salon, and has never colored her own. (I sort of think my color looks a little more natural than hers, and one time they burned her hair and it looked terrible). I helped her fix it, and she almost wanted to do it herself after that, but for some reason she thinks salons are better.

I don't have the hair coloring talent that you described. So I go get mine done professionally. But not right now.Growing my hair out for locks of love.Though becoming increasingly impatient. But from what I know, they won't accept coloured hair.So as inpatient as I am,at least I have growing hair.Sorry.I know that was a bit more than you asked for.

I used to color my own but I don't anymore. Too much damage can be done when you do it yourself. I got to my beautician who is out on her own with a shop so she doesn't charge like the salons do. I pay less than half of what salons charge.

there's no way i can get the multiple colors i have weaved into my hair. so i get it done at the salon. if i want to switch to one color, i would do it myself. it's worth it to me. i don't have time and it's very relaxing.
