Wash him with cool water with a mild soap (plain baby shampoo seems to work well) follow with Main & Tail horse conditioner (sold cheap at Wal-mart) Really rub the conditioner into the areas he itches the most. Let sit on him for at least 5 minutes, 10 if you can manage to keep him still.
He will still itch for a few days, be sure to brush him carefully and continue bathing him everyother day for about a week. Then just drop it down to once a week.

My dogs both itch till they are raw from the summer heat and any stray fleas they pick up. This is the only thing that has ever helped them both out. It was hard to do at first but now that they know what is going on they seem relieved when they see me with that bottle of conditioner.

I hope that the vets looked carefully for mites and other skin problems caused by tiny bugs. The itching can be an allergy to a particular food or to dust, etc. Allergies can cause constant itching and scratching in dogs. The next vet you go to ask him to take an allergy test for various substances. Not cheap but often worthwhile. The dog may have to be put on anti-histamine pills along with a shot. Also bathing the dog in special shampoo consisting of anti-allergy medication and oatmeal can be of help. Does the dog scratch as much when outside as when inside the house? If so then the allergy can be due to certain food.

My shih tzu had the same type of problem so first I changed his shampoo. I bought an oatmeal shampoo and also a conditioner as well, and I give him a bath in cool water as oppose to warm water that may assist in drying his skin and fur. When I spoke to my vet she told me he may be allergic to something in his food. Dogs can be allergic to wheat, corn, beef and a few other things that many commerical dog foods have tons of. I switched murphy to Ultra by NutroFoods which is a hollistic type of food and it doesn't contain any corn, and little wheat or beef if any. After a few weeks he doesn't scratch much, and I've noticed his fur is shinier as well as softer. Ultra contains Omega 3 fatty acids and flaxseed oil which helps with the dry skin. This should help if the condition isn't something that is more medically complex then I would say you may want to try a 4th vet in case it is something a lot more serious. If the price of the Ultra is too high for your budget just look food that doesn't contain too much of the ingredients that a dog can be allergic too. If you look at the back of the can or bag the first ingredient listed is of the highest concentration in the food and then the next and so on and so on. Good luck with your doggie!

Go to www.doggiebagonline.com/forum and tell them your problem. There are many people that will go to GREAT lengths to help you help your dog.

I don't know what the vets have told you, but it could be due to fleas, allergies, or mites...or possibly something else I don't know about. Do you give your dog flea medication every month? If so, it may not be fleas. If you see fleas on your dog, give him a Dawn bath (wet him, put the Dawn on him, let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes, rinse, repeat if necessary) and then wait TWO days to put flea medication on him. If it's allergies, contact a vet (a different one than the ones you have contacted previously) and ask how much CHILDREN'S Benadryl to give him. To find out if your dog has mites, a vet wil have to do skin scrapings. If so, my dog was able to get rid of hers within a month and a half and hers was a severe case.

For now, try batheing him in an oatmeal-based shampoo and see if that helps the scratching. Good luck!

she problem has dried skin. my dog has the same problem and and i give her an egg in his dish and some olive oil in her dish overnight. when i feed her. the vets can't do anything about itching. you could give him a benadryl tablet in a pice of bread that will also help the itching. i hope this helps.

It could be dry skin.. mites... allergies to something at home... allergies to something in his food... poor quality food... it sounds like you need a vet who will help you work through all these issues.

my dog had an "itchy problem" too. we found out that it was a bacterial dermatitis that could be controlled with special shampoo and a simple round of antibiotics. he also had severe allergic reactions to certain types of grass. hope this helps
