I got a back tooth pulled 4 days ago, and ever since yesterday my jaw started hurting pretty bad, i got another prescription for pain killers, but they are not even touching the pain. I have a nasty odor that i cant get rid of in my mouth now along with a disgusting taste when i touch the tip of my toungue to the hole in my jaw. The pain feels like i am constantly gritting my teeth, or like i am bitting down so hard i feel as though my teeth are gonna snap out of my head! I wanna know if there is something i can do at home until i can get to the dentist to help relieve the pain. PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Bite on a moist piece of gauze exactly the way you did after your tooth was removed. Keep changing the gauze as needed. This will keep the air and saliva from getting in there and that is the cause of a lot of the pain. You COULD get some benzocaine 20% (OraJel, etc) and put a dab on the gauze where it will touch the socket if plain gauze doesn't stop the pain.

Of course, you already know (as I can see in your question) that you need to see the dentist for proper treatment and best relief. I hope this gets you through the weekend.

I would recommend you not to put anything in the area . A dry socket is usually confirmed by a dentist viewing it. The pain is not pleasant and causes alot of pain. Unfortunately the only relief is to wash the area gently to remove the food debris. Then using warm salt mouthwashes after eating . And taking off the counter pain killers. A dentist usually washes the area properly with saline to clean the socket and inserts alvogyl. Alvogyl is basically a combination of different ingredients whcih provides a soothing effect. Sometimes an infectioncan be confused with dry socket by a normal patient so please be careful.

I was going to suggest Vicodin, but that's probably what the doctor gave you.Sometimes, the dentist has to do things that will make you hurt. Was it wisdom teeth?

Try rinsing with warm salt water, or warm water with 3% peroxide, or the last thing that I can think of is a wet, cooled tea bag. Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
