Stay in a motel in NJ or outside of Manhattan and either take cab or the Staten Island Ferry to Manhattan. The Ferry is free, and you can walk, take the subway or a cab from there. And parking on Staten Island is only like 6-10 bucks for all day.

I like the Gramercy Park hotel. It's right by union square and the village, it's moderately priced and has great subway access.

i think the concept of when in rome do as the romans do applies here relax don't worry about the budget have a good memorable time and you'll love it here
