All the house's are townhomes or semis. Why is this? The only completely sperate house's I've seen are in very wealthy area's or in the countyside.

That's not so.There are many detached residences that are not in the country side or in very wealthy areas.

First of all, it's cheaper to build 3 walls rather than 4 and, secondly, it's cheaper to heat because just one or 2 walls are outside walls.

Land is also very expensive and, unlike in America, you don't actually own the land the house sits on, but lease it for a set length of time (typically 100 year leases) from the Crown because the Crown owns all of the land.

Simple - England is a very small country and a large proportion of the cost of a house is the land it stands on. More houses per acre means more people housed for the same land cost.

It's also why most houses are smaller than US ones - the land is hideously expensive, and made more so by planning laws (zoning) which triy to ensure than the countryside remains countryside and isn't covered with houses.

I think it is from the Industrial Revolution times when workers lived in small communities near the factories where they worked. Especially in the North. They had no transport or alarm clocks, so they had to live near the factory and the knocker upper ( a person with a stick who used to knock on doors and windows to wake people up for work} had to knock on every factory workers home.

Also England is a very small island with a large community. There is not a lot of space.

I live in an area which is not all that wealthy and it's only semi rural and there are loads of detatched houses around here.....

One reason why people don't always want to live in detatched houses is that they would have to pay significantly more in council taxes....just the way this country is.....
