Was wondering what your thoughts are on rules that aren't exactly discrimination but give no good reason as to "why".

Situation: If you were a guy or knew a guy with long hair and he wished to play baseball and the coach told him he'd have to cut it off in order to play without any explanation, what would your thought be and why?

the only thing in the school handbook that states anything about hair is on a healthy point of view, hence hair is dirty, unkempt.
it says nothing about sports and long hair. if you think about it, girls play sports and have long hair and all it takes is a rubber band. if you read about the issues regarding hair and the stigmatizisms and prejudice in our history, you will find that in most cases it boils down to power.
the coach yes may want to him to cut his hair because he is part of a team, however, one can certainly be ones self aside of being a "team player".
more thoughts?
ya'll are doing great. i am awaiting a call from the principal as both coaches could not tell me why the rule applies, even though it is not in the handbook.

I'd look into the rules concerning athletic participation at the school. If there is nothing in the rules about students playing sports with long hair, then your next step is to approach the principle. Tell him or her that you will be retaining an attorney and will take this to the school board and the local media. The length of a student's hair has nothing to do with their athletic ability. Stay strong and stand up for your son's rights!

There are men in the NBA of all races that have medium and long hair. I really don't understand why a basketball player can't have long hair. For example, female basketball players are not required to cut their hair. So obviously it does not effect their playing. I think the only reason coaches want their male players to cut their hair to give the team a clean cut look and have some type of order. Or could be the fact that most basketballs players are black. Alot of black males choose to wear their hair either in an afro, braids, twist, or long pulled back in a pony tail. The coaches may think has something to do with the hip hop culture and don't want it to look like they are coaching a bunch of thugs.

Well, first he'd have to give an explanation. If there's some type of safety reasoning, then it's understandable even if it is a bit overboard. But if it's just his personal preferance, I'd go to the school board and get their opinion. I don't think one coach can order something like that.

i would ask why. if he does not give a reason, i won't do it
if its for safety, i will
if its just for kicks (his of course) i'll see him fired.
