Ladies only: Why is receiving jewelry so significant to a girl?

It seems that girls really like jewelry, as a gift from their man, and as fasion accessories. What is it that's so important about jewelry?

I'd like to know this so that I can pick out gifts better for her.

Diamonds are a girls best friend. They bring strength. I think it's the fact that he took time and paid attention (long ago) to what she wanted. I got a heart shaped diamond on Valentines Day one year, I was so happy I didn't even flinch when he told me he couldn't pay his 1/2 of the bills.

Jewelry is a great gift for a lot of reasons. First of all, its because it costs money. Women want a man who isn't cheap and is willing to spent a little of his hard earned cash to make her happy. Its pretty and shiny. They can pick it out, or you can, so it can be really personal. And probably most importantly, it can be displayed. Other women like her friends will see it and be like "Oh, that's so pretty!! Where's you get it??" and so then it makes you look good and her feel good because theres always that "my man is better than yours" rivalry between girl-friends.
