vayacondios . . . Where do you live? I had no idea pidgen was so broad . . . really interesting. I was referring to the one in hawaiian local culture, but nice bit of info. I know the one in hawaii dates back to plantationdays where you combined english, japanese, chinese, hawaiian, and all the other races that worked the plantation.

Once upon one time dere waz one young girl named Stacy. Stacy waz 15 years old and stay living in Salt Lake, Hawaii. Yeah I do. I was born and raised there. Not everyone speaks it there but if you'd lived there for a while or grew up there you don't realize that they're not speaking English. There are very few people who speak total pidgen. But living there you'll automatically speak a few pidgen words here and there. Most people from Hawaii can turn it off and on but still have an accent, and then there are the people who can't like my dad. In some colleges it's a foreign language course.

Pidgin English is a dialect in itself. 100 yrs. old, a conglomeration of all the immigrants & nationalities. It is a very efficient language, limited amount of words, to the point, having a deep meaning. So is the Hawaiian Language. Some people consider it ignorant to speak pidgin, but that's because some words & phrases, ( just like in other languages ) have many different meanings in diferent contexts & they can't figure it out. That's OK but don't put it down. e.g. "Da Kine" has 1000's of meanings, depending on the context used, & all us locals understand completely what the other one is saying right away, it jus comes natural, lai'dat, ( that's another phrase, meaning [like that] ) Just think of how many meanings "Aloha" has. It can mean , hi, bye, I love you, or go to hell! depending on the context. Haole (ghost, or white) is not a derrogitory term until you hear, "f**ken haole! den you better run & pray da whole family not chasing you. I hope dis helped you out Sista, 'cause if you make one mistake it might be fatal. Also if you one haole from da mainland, don't EVER, I repeat Ever try talk pidgin, even if you wen read da book "Pidgin To Da Max" ( May be hazardous to your health lai'dat! ) Aloha! Come visit Hawaii, da locals r very laid back & friendly, but no forget to go home afta you spent all your Kala here.

Pmiya provides a very strong post. Unless a person understands the diction, linguistics and the cultural contributions that other languages made to generate Hawaiian pidgin, one should not give the impression that one is fluent in it. By virtue of interjecting the wrong word, the wrong inflection, or the wrong pronunciation, - a well intended comment could turn into a verbal insult that could easily escalate into physical violence.

i can.
pidgen english-- is from the time of china and british trade--about the time of the opium war or just before--
it is british english word that comes from the manipulation and sardonic mocking humour of the british business and traders of the time
the reason--the word came to be-- is because of the the way the chinese would say the word "business"-- the british--(in all their nasty humour) lovingly and mockingly broke it down to "pidgen" english (chinese business english) -
I live in china-- i am british--and canadian--
i have blog also called pidgen english on another site--(which i hardly ever use anymore)
but--anyway-- thats the story--
it is basically-- the understanding of an english which is broken into simple basic form-- and corrupted in words and utterances--and then added with foreign tones and accents-- --it is a simple -crude-- corrupted english--
and yes--i do speak it here-
cheers
p.s--the note above--with the" me ay you ay-" etc etc- is not pidgen-it is a form of pig latin-- (however--it is not in its correct form either--they forgot to drop the first constanant--anyway--cheers again)
