It's a difficult emotion to define. It's kind of shifty-eyed, looking away in embarrassment. I see it as the equivalent of an embarrassed cough. I might use it when you or I say something crazy, inappropriate, or suggestive. It also works as a reply to an accusation that the accused will neither confirm or deny.

I think it looks like a "rolling of the eyes" effect.
You probably said something goofy, and he rolled his eyes, and won't explain what it means to save his tail.
