long hair in school?

i went to a catholic elementary and middle school. in eigth grade i tried to grow it long but they wouldnt let me. when i went to high school i went to a public one. i grew my hair long and no one cared. i just recently started going to church with m,y wife and the priest said if i wanted to come back i had to cut my hair. why do catholics have a problem wuith long hair.
