Its a two man job
have one person pet him in his favorite spot to calm him.
than the other person should slowly and carefully trim out the knots with a scissors, being carefull to hold your fingers between his skin and the scissors to prevent cutting him.
A trimmer makes noise, and your cat will probably run.
If the cats gets "upitty" stop and let him leave. he'll come back for more attention, I'm sure, and you can finish later.
when your all done BRUSH BRUSH BRUSH. I brush my Maine coon twice daily, and he rarely gets knots.
My mom had a cat with knots on 60% of her body, and My Hubby and I did this while my Mom was away ( it took DAYS) but eventually we got her all trimmed down. My mom brushes her everyday, and the knots have not been back for months.
If the cats hair knots easily, try adding a bit of oil to his food. It helps his skin stay smooth and a bit oily, and when you brush the oils will detangle and soften the fur.
or, leave it to a professional, it will cost you, but then all you have to do is mantain with brushing him.

My cat has the same problem. My cat always gets mats around his butt because he licks in that direction and he has long fur. I get another person to hold the upper part of his body while I hold the lower and cut the mats out with scissors. Cutting the mats out leaves weird spots, but it's better than nothing. I try to use a cat de-fleaing comb to gets the mats out, as well, but I can't get my cat to sit very still for it. You might have to get the mats out one at a time while giving the cat plenty of rest in between.

I found this really cool cat mat detangling spray at a dollar store once. that and a good cat comb took care of my long haired female's mats. but since I've never seen that since, I'd start by clipping his claws and then give him a really good brushing/combing.

When my cat had mats I cut them off with a pair of scissors. She didn't like it too much but I did it anyway and they haven't come back.
Brushing daily helps keep the mats away so after you get rid of them get him used to a daily brushing.

i have a white angora and her fur mats at the back of her back near the top of the tail.. its cruel to try and brush them out! It hurts! I cut the mats out with the scissors when shes comfortable laying down on the couch beside me.. no stress for kitty and she doesn't fuss at all.. the fur will grow back and you can hardly notice the missing patches! hope i helped!!

Yes, You just have to be persistent...keep brushing just a little at a time. My husband is the only one my cat will let brush her, but he says that he just keeps trying to untangle the knots with his fingers, untwisting her fur that is tangled. She is more tolerant of that than she is of the brushing. I think there are also products on the market to de-tangle just like there is for children's hair. If all else fails take her to the groomer.

Sometimes the only way to get rid of them is to cut them out. Once you've got them removed, brush him every day, and give him treats to convince him to stop fighting. Eventually if you keep him tangle-free, he'll start looking forward to the brushing, and not just the treats.

try detangling spray you get at the store for little girls or try just plain conditioner they should both work. if not shaving may be your only option. Good luck

try cutting them, and them you could give them a toy with catnip to play with before you brush them, or try brushing it after it wakes up.
