A straight would be any five cards in numerical order. For example 23456 or 45678. The lowest straight is also known as the wheel and in it the ace counts as one, so it is A2345. The highest straight is TJQKA where the ace is the high card. If the hand is not only in order but also the same suit it is called a straight flush, the highest of which is the royal flush which is an ace high straight flush. A straight flush and a royal flush are the rarest and most valuable hands in poker. Even if you play a lot you may go an entire year without seeing a royal flush.

Texas Hold'em is a game of community cards. Each player has two hole cards that are private to him only. He can use one, two or neither of his hole cards to make the best five card hand. So if the community cards are 4 6 7 8 K and the player has 5 K, he can use the five to create the straight. If the community cards are 2 3 4 5 6 and the player has A A, the player would play neither of his hole cards, since the pair of aces is not better than the straight on the board and even adding the A would simply make a lower straight than the one that was out there. The most deceptive straight is when a board like 5 7 9 A K is out there. A player holding an 8 6 would fill up using both cards and create a nine high straight, the highest possible with those community cards.

A straight must consist of five cards in a row. ALL straights have either a five or a ten in them.

Examples: A-K-Q-J-T, K-Q-J-T-9, 9-8-7-6-5, A-2-3-4-5

All the same suit is a VERY rare hand, a straight flush. You will see these only a few times in your poker 'life'.

A straight is any 5 cards ( the two in your hand plus the 5 cards on the board) in numerical order, a straight flush would be any five cards in order of the same suit. The ranking of hands are as follows. High card, one pair, two pair, three of a kind, a straight, a flush, full house, four of a kind, straight flush, and finally a royal flush.

5 consecutive cards...doesn't have to be the same suit. if they are the same suit, you've got yourself a hell of a hand.

ie: A 2 3 4 5, 10 J Q K A

a straight with the same suits becomes a straight flush. a straight can be any continous sequence of 5 cards of any suit.
