I had a very cheap one (£52). Big mistake. It didn't work very well and kept over heating! Quickly got rid of it.

When I get around to getting another, I might get something like this: http://www.richersounds.com/showproduct.php?cda=showproduct&pid=PANA-DMRES10

However, analogue recording is still a viable format, and very good when you use Super VHS. Here's an example of a good machine:

It's up to you, but personally, I do like Analogue.

Theres the Accurian DVD recorder that cost 279 dollars at the Shack. What's great about it is you can get rid of your Tivo service. The device allows you to record 80 hours (I think) of TV programs on the device and then set it to record when it is convenient.

You can also replicate CDs, older VHS tapes to DVD, and of course your Tivo stuff.

in case you get the gadget with the VHS outfitted in you do no longer could connect the two together. in case you get the machines with out the VHS outfitted in you do get greater useful options of machines for the main section. relies upon upon how lots you opt for for to spend. yet sure, the better priced and greater reliable machines don't have the VHS unit outfitted in. Connecting the VHS to the DVD recorder is a controversy of connecting the video and audio outputs of the VHS gadget to the video and audio inputs of the DVD recorder (yellow to yellow, white to white and purple to purple) with RCA cable connections.
