Sure they do, starting with the late 60's. I have a 1971 VW Combi which I purchased new in February of 1971. I had the option of manual or automatic. I chose the manual for one reason alone, horsepower. An automatic has an inherent power loss in the fluid coupling which wastes power. My VW has a 66 horsepower engine, which will make 65 MPH on a good day on level ground with the pedal to the metal. The same vehicle with an automatic would lose some energy to the fluid coupling and be wound out at somewhat slower a speed. Since then, 1971, the power loss in fluid couplings has been reduced through better engineering, and some even lock when at speed which reduces the fluid friction loss to zero, the same as my manual clutch at the same speed. Now, automatics are mostly standard with manual being optional. I like my clutch. At idle at a stoplight, with the clutch depressed, I use less gas than the same vehicle with an automatic, and with traffic what it is these days, and gas prices being what they are, every little bit counts...

The 2006 Volkswagen Beetle 2.5 has an optional 6-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic, and the 2006 Volkswagen Beetle TDI has an optional 6-speed automatic transmission with DSG (Direct Shift Gearbox) and Tiptronic in Canada and the U.S.A. I hope this helps!

yes the automatic trans is available in the new beetle but word of advice if you buy one with a automatic make sure that you get a good service contract from the dealer/vw where tou buy it because to be honest the auto transmissions in vw are not very dependable as they get higher mileage on them. around 70k and higher we see them in for trans issues. if you are really considering buying a beetle you should consider learning how to drive a manual transmission they are a lot more dependable but make sure you can drive a manual before getting one because the clutch is not a cheap repair when you burn it up from learning. in other words learn on something else that can take the abuse more like an older truck or something like that. hope you find this info helpful. happy motoring. drivers wanted....VW!

I have a 1993 VW Golf - it's automatic.
Call Volkswagen - go to a dealership
look in the newspaper or Auto-Trader
Man, there are VW's all over the place
that are automatic.

almost every vw made today is an auto. The only VW in recent history NOT to come with the auto option is the mark3 GTi VR6.

but be smart and get a stick. theyre much safer, and overall much more enjoyable to drive.
