No. If you do, the warm cake will melt the icing on the bottom and instead of the rest of it spreading when you try to put it on, it will just slide and smear around. Also, you will get more little crumbs visible in the icing. Wait a little while for it to cool, and it will end up a lot better-looking.

No! If you put icing on a cake if it's warm the icing will melt and soak through the cake. Wait a little longer for it to cool. If you don't have time, stick it in the fridge. Then ice it.

Waiting til it's cooled down is best so the icing doesn't "pull" at the cake---ripping up the top.
Consider this: sometimes, based on the type of cake--just shaking powdered sugar over it will do. Or, try using Cool Whip instead of icing if time is a concern and waiting for cake to cool isn't an option.
(thinking outside the "recipe" box is allowed!!!) Happy Baking!

Not if you want to see or taste the icing. It will melt into a hot cake. Cake must be completely cool before icing, not even warm.

No wait until it's cool. If you ice a cake while warm the icing will melt.

Only if you want it to run down the sides instead of decrating it the old fashion way. You just always let your cool thoroughly or even put in frig after it cools to hold the frosting on it better. Once you have it cold you can take more time when you frost it and do your decorations then put back in frig until you want to serve to keep icing from loosing it look. You also cut your cake in half and put the frosting in between as well if you want. Put you cake on a lazy susan for best way to frost easy to turn as you are going around the sides. Good Luck. If you like instead of frosting you can melt sweet chocolate and pur over the cake and let it run down the sides and then put in frig to harden again. your guests will love that if they enjoy chocolate. Pipe icing around the top rim and bottem rim once on the plate you are using to serve and add that extra touch. You will find all kinds of things you can do after you practice on them.

Not if the icing is the kind that gets ruined by the heat of the cake.

When a cake is hot it crumbles easier. So if you wait for it to cool then you can ice it. The icing really isn't a concern.
