I would have to agree that it's a painted turtle

1. It is a pretty young turtle, so it won't mate for several years and does not really need a cage mate.

2. It appears to be in a pretty bowl, but I really hope that is not its home. Turtles need AT LEAST 10 gallons of swiiming water per inch of turtle- so even this baby should be in about 15 gallons of water- about a 30 gallon tank half full. In the next couple years, it will pop up to about 4" and need at least 40 gallons of its own. If you add another turtle, it needs its own 10 gallons per inch.

3. It is definitely a slider. If it has red 'ear' stripes, it is a Red-ear Slider (RES). If it does not, it may be a Yellow-belly slider, or any of a dozen other sliders and cooters.

You can find out about the care of this group of turtles by going to http://www.redearslider.com

Extremely hard to identify with just that image. Need pics of both it's head (top and sides would be useful) and its belly (plastron).

But I am guessing you do not have access to those pictures since you are trying to identify so that you can buy it.

My guess is also the Red Ear Slider. They are one of the most common turtles available in the pet trade.

Their is quite a few good turtle breeders online, or you can always try the local pet shop(s).

Definitely NOT a painted turtle, they are much darker and have a significant amount of red on them. I'd bet money it's a red eared slider, but we can't see its face... If it's a RES it'll have a red streak on either side of the face. They are probably THE most common turtle people catch. (At least around here)

It looks like a red-earred slider. We need to see a picture of his head to make sure. I'm fairly certain it's not a painted turtle. The markings on his shell do not look like a painted turtle. Here are a couple of web sites that show you pictures of turtles and you can see for yourself:

Well with the markings it looks like a painted turtle. But you can't see it's head so it could be a red eared slider. Could you take a picture of the front of it?

That is not a painted turtle! It is probably a red ear slider or a cooter. For me to correctly identify it for you, I need you to take 2 more pics please. Take 1 of his head, and one of his plastron (belly). Thank you.

your best bet would be to ask a local pet shop/vet clininc or to surf the internet and look up turtle species (but this could take a while and you don't know if everything is true.

although he kinda looks like the painted turtles in the creek in my backyard.. (I think it is a painted turtle)

I'm pretty sure it's a red ear slider turtle...

looks like a red eared slider to me, you can tell by looking at it's head. if it has red were your ears would be that's what it is.
