Only Marines. Some people claim it is because of the haircut, (high & tight), others claim it's because they open your head like a jar and fill it with what they want.

PS: the Leatherneck part is from a band of leather that Marine boarding parties wore to protect them from sword slashes, no the sun

Jarhead:
A US Marine - according to some, a reference to the "high and tight" haircut and squared chin. Alternatively, American Heritage Dictionary states, "Perhaps from the shape of the hat the Marines once wore" [1]. On the other hand, the Oxford English Dictionary originally cites it as U.S. Army slang for a mule (1916), then later as a word for a "foolish or stupid person" (1942); the application to a Marine cites from 1944. Oddly, it was applied to U.S. Army soldiers in the 1930s, based on the mule mascot of Army's football team [2]. According to some, a reference to the fact that the Mason Jar Company produced many of the metal helmets worn by marines during WW II. Pejorative when used by non-Marines; defiantly proud when used by Marines about themselves (as in the book and movie of the same name, about a Marine sniper during the First Gulf War) .

Only the US marines are reffered to as jar-heads. It was said their hats on their uniform made them look like mason jars, or that the regulation "high and tight" haircut gave the appearance of a jar-lid.

Jar-head was a term for US Marines - empty headed like a jar ,a more apt name was and is Leatherneck from the severe haircut and the Sun`s effect on the grunt`s neck.

ONLY marines are called jarheads! i've heard a couple reasons why the call marines jarheads, one reason is that they say that when a marine gets his very short haircut his head looks like a jar! and second reason i heard was that marines get brainwashed during basic training! so brainwashed that the u can put things into his head, like a jar, and he'll believe it! get it? ok kool, see ya later!

We were always told it was because the Marines were all so un-intelligent that their heads could fit in jars.
