There are several different operations for morbid obesity. In order to qualify for any of these operations, certain criteria, beyond morbid obesity, must be met.

Lap-Band

The lap band is a silicon band that is placed around the stomach using laparoscopic techniques. The band is adjustable and removable. This band is tightened around the stomach, and creates two pouches. The first pouch, or upper stomach, fills quickly with food -- because of this, the body recognizes that the hunger has been satiated. The food begins digestion, and is passed into the second stomach. The stomach is not physically altered during the lap-band procedure. it's like holding your hand in the middle of a plastic bag -- stuff can still go from the top to the bottom -- it just takes a little time.

Gastric Bypass

The gastric bypass surgery can be performed using either open or laparoscopic techniques. In this surgery, the stomach is segmented into two portions -- the first portion is about the size of an egg. This section of the stomach is stapled to the digestive tract on the upper end, and then to a portion of the intestines on the lower end. The second portion of the stomach is stapled shut -- it remains in the body, but is essentially useless. In this surgery, the stomach is physcially altered, and a small stomach pouch is attached to the intestines -- people get full faster.

With any surgery, there is a risk of infection . . . this risk is greater with open procedures as opposed to laparoscopic. With any surgery, there is a risk of death, or complications from the anesthesia.

Because the stomach is physically altered during the gastric bypass, it is possible to damage the new stomach if the proper diet is not followed -- typically, there is liquid diet, then soft food, then regular foods . . . but it's imperative not to over-eat. Doing so can cause the stomach to rip apart at the staples . . . and result in horrid infection, or even death.

The average weight loss for the gastric bypass is 75% of the amount by which the individual is overweight. An example: If you weigh 300 pounds, and should weigh 150 -- you are overweight by 150 pounds. With the gastric bypass, the average weight loss would be around 88 pounds.

Because part of the intestines is bypassed with the gastric bypass surgery, there is also a greater risk of vitamin deficiency -- chances are, your surgeon will suggest a multi-vitamin for the rest of your life.

While the risks are significant, the risks of obesity are, as well. If there's a 3 percent chance of death with the gastric bypass, there's a 97 percent chance that you'll get your life back.

I've been considering it for years, and as soon as I'm able, I'm jumping on the opportunity to have this surgery -- so many things in my life will change . . . the risk is well work the possiblities . . . to me, anyway.

There isn't just one operation. There are several different types of weight loss surgery (WLS).
Most of them aim to lower the amount of food that can be eaten at one time by restricting the size of the stomach. Jaw-wiring also accomplishes the same thing but clearly that's a temporarily solution. One can always get around this by drinking high-calorie liquids such as milkshakes, although with some stomach-reduction procedure you get a syndrome known as "dumping" when high concentrations of sugar make you very sick.
The other aspect of weight loss surgeries, which not all operations do, is to create malabsorption of calories and nutrients by shortening/rearranging the small intestines. This means that you don't get all the vitamins either.
The positive side effect is of course weight loss. But you can lose your hair due to insufficient protein intake, your incisions can become infected or split open, you can become so sick you can't eat anything at all, and of course, as with any surgery, you can die. The risks of dying are going down as doctors perfect the surgery techniques.

Gastric Bypass Surgery /gastrectomy/stomach stapling /lapband (all types of weight loss surgery) is very safe nowadays. It is very cheap in India. There is one company that is very famous in India that arranges obesity surgery for foreigners in India. They are called the Forerunners Healthcare.I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and about their patient stories.

I have also read that they arrange financing for american and canadian patients as obesity surgery is not covered by insurance. They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. The cost savings are incredible. As a doctor i personally believe that your obesity surgery can be easily handled in India as the quality of healthcare available here is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.

My cousin got her revision surgery for gastric bypass in India through the forerunners healthcare .She is more than very happy with the results. She has lost 65lbs in 5 months. She just paid 25% of the amount she was quoted in USA and is all praise for this forerunners healthcare company.hope this helps

Gastric bypass is one of the options I think. The complications can be malnutrition, infection, and death. I'm sure that there are more...I'm not an expert. I just watch Discovery Health...

In any case, it sounds like a pretty terrible procedure. I'm not in this situation but I think I'd try other things first.
