Isn't it annoying when people say that to you? Why do you suppose they need to comment on it? They may not mean it as a criticism, just a comment, but it always seems like a criticism, doesn't it.. or at least that they want to be the one to get you to "open up" so they can be all smug about it. Hmmphh. Pains in the gluteous maximus, they are.

I've had people say that to me. It always surprises me, because when I get to know people, I'm a chatterbox. I tend to be quiet around those I don't know well. So if someone says it, I just say "oh really, you think so?" and leave it at that. With a smile, by the way.

Tell them to stop worrying about people other than themselves. I have had people tell me that. The truth is the people that said that are the people I have no interest in talking to. So the assume since I don't hold conversations with them, I must be either shy, quiet, or lame......Don't let it get to you. Defend yourself but don't get worked up over it. Sometimes people just don't feel like talking.

I know, ain't that annoying! People at work would say that all the time.
I had my Nana embroider me a great picture. It said:
A wise old owl sat in a tree
The more he heard the less he spoke
The more he spoke the less he learned
We should all be like the wise old owl
or something like that

continue to remain quiet & smirk similar to your avatar pic:) don't give this chatty person the satisfaction of convincing you to talk to him/her.if this person asks you more questions,don't answer back.stick out your tongue & smirk again:) don't say a word.that will make him/her furious.eventually he/she will get more annoyed and walk out of the room.now it's time to call a friend and tell them about this talkative person that won't ever shut up,while laughing out loud uncontrollably^___^

Presumably they are trying to engage you in conversation. If you wish to do so, go ahead. If you don't, keep quiet.
Some would benefit from silence once in a while.
