the smell is often caused by bacteria.

when i had my cat declawed ( i know, I'm horrible), he had a HORRIBLE complication and had to use "yesterdays news" recycled newspaper litter for a month.

i was AMAZED at how much better everything smelled.

Apparently, the newspaper doesn't host bacteria the way clay does, ( which is why it's used after surgery) and so it stinks less.

You can scoop it, but you need a scoop with larger holes. Or buy a cheap pair of tongs and pick the poop out. It DOES NOT clump, so you'll need a spoon or something to get the bits soiled wit urine out each day.

the BEST part is once you get it really wet, it turns into a paper mache like substance.

I just dump the box weekly in the woods behind my house and the rain disintegrates it. Each spring i plant wild flower on last years spot and make a new one. The flowers grow great from the nutrients in the newspaper.

Try putting baking soda on the bottom of his litter tray if its a male cat the only thing to permanently remove the stench is getting him snipped!!! Also consider using MAXX litter its like 8 dollars for a 8 kg bag

I have two cats and two litter boxes --- visitors can't tell I have 2 boxes.

We use the Fresh Step with Cedar & Carbon - works really well! We also have an automatic litterbox, so the "deposits" don't sit out all day - yuck.

Finally, we got an Oust battery operated fan and put it in the room with the boxes- it kills off any odors that escape everything else.

Fresh Step is a nice clumping litter. Always bleach out the pan before adding new litter. Also feed better quality food to reduce waste and odor.

I use a dome like kitty litter box and it seems to help with the smell as weill as a good kitty litter, its worth spending the money on the good stuff like fresh step. Good Luck

I really like the litter by Arm and Hammer...its' expensive but it sure does help with the odor.
If the litterbox itself is smelly after cleaning, it's because plastic is somewhat porous and eventually you'll want to replace it altogether. We replace ours with brand new boxes twice a year to avoid this.
Of course, daily or twice daily scooping is mandatory!!
Best Wishes

Sometimes what you put in your CAT can affect the smell in the litterbox. A raw meat diet will result in smaller and less smelly poops as there is very little waste in that type of diet.

If your cat eats a diet of 2/3 corn then you can expect larger poopies and they will be smellier.

My cats eat raw meat and I don't add anything to their cat litter.

how often do you change the litter? you should change it once a week or less for one cat and twice and week for two and scoop out the poop everyday. i use fresh step litter and it seems to work fine.
