For those who said "arrest", how is this possible. Someone who tells you they have an addiciton, is not committing an offence. It is not an offence to be an addict.

I would hope that anyone whos spouse came to them to tell them that they had a problem, would support them and get them help.

If it were mine, we'd work through it. Knowledge is key.

NOTE REGARDING THE ANSWER BEFORE THIS
(nature of addicts)

As a cop, I don't know how much interaction with addicts you've had. I've lived in the trenches with them and been close enough to understand their positions. Drugs such as crack and opiates are extremely addictive and they take hold of a person, becoming their sole purpose. Addicts don't grow up saying they want to be addicts. It happens. We can't judge them on that. We need to educate, support and aid.

For anyone to blame their spouse for becoming an addict and "putting your job at risk" is selfish. People don't set out to become addicts. It happens. Most addicts thought "I'll never get addicted. I can stop whenever" but then they are.

You wouldn't blame a person for getting cancer, but you can say they shouldn't have smoked. So you can't get mad at an addict, but you can tell them they shouldn't have tried it in the first place.

First off...if I can't spot an addict, I need a new job.

2nd...I'm assuming you mean illegal drugs, no I wouldn't flush them. Nor would I arrest them. I would secure the illegals, contact my superior and let the law do what it will in that respect. I would be too close to be objective.

Sounds harsh? I don't think so. This person who is supposed to love me would be risking everything I am, everything I worked for to get high. Illegal stash in my home puts me, my family, my career, my life at risk. Unacceptable.

However, that doesn't mean I'd turn my back on them either. If they showed a genuine desire to get clean and stay clean? I'd stay by their side thru rehab and court, if it happened but to be honest? The relationship would be severely damaged...trust and respect, gone for me and I don't honestly know if it could be rebuilt.

They might perform the initial arrest, but would have to back
off the case from then on due to conflict of interest.

However, drug addictions are major problems with both
the police and their families. Different jurisdictions have
different programs available to them - that is, you go into
re-hab with relatively little fuss.

However, HIDING it from a police officer who is your spouse
is a bad mistake. If you are caught, they may end up being
charged as an accomplice on the assumption that they knew
what was going on.

Get help - talk to the officer soon.

Be supportive and try to get them help. We see what drugs do to people but they have to want help. If necessary seek professional help and counseling. Keep a close check on them.

Put them in a program and try to clean them up, then decide on whether or not to stay. Owe that much before bailing out.
