It depends on the cat.

Cats are naturally sociable creatures and in the wild most live in groups.

Some rescue groups and shelters have gone so far as to refuse to adopt out singles, feeling that condemning a cat to a solitary life is cruelty.

Not every cat would agree with that, and some do quite well by themselves.

My dear departed Scooter was an only cat for the first four years of his life and he liked it that way. He saw no reason why there needed to be more than one cat (him) on this planet. He would've been happy to spend his life as an only cat.

When we took in the late, great Rusty, it took Scooter the better part of a year to accept him. But eventually he came to love Rusty like a brother and he ended up being even happier with Rusty than he was by himself.

There's no easy answer to your question. Only your kitty knows how he feels about having feline companionship. Maybe you could take a kitty on a trial basis and see how they get along. A younger male, maybe a year old, would probably be best.

If you've had him for two years he is probably just fine alone. Cats have a very regal approach to life. They like having ALL the food, ALL the attention. Aloneness is not the same as lonlines.

If both you and he seem to be happy then leave things as they are.

Two cats are great. They do have each other when you want to travel or work keeps you away long hours.

If you feel strongly drawn to having another cat, now is the right time. The older the cat, the harder to get them to accept a newcomer.

Cats can get lonely pretty easily. I have one who is a year old and she LOVES the attention we give her. The second we stop, she gets cranky. So in some aspects it would be good to have a companion for her. On the other hand, she would also probably be jealous of the new cat since she's been the only one for a while. Cats, like people, have their own individual personalities, so you'll have to guage it for her. Good Luck!! :0)

Yes, they do get lonely by themselves. It's aways nice to have another of your kind around :) I say to get a second cat so the kitty isn't always by itself. Two different times in my life I tried having just one cat and both times, they were so sad whenever I left for work, so I got a second cat and they were MUCH happier.

Same thing with my parents' cat, when they had just one it would be lonely and more clingy towards them. They did what I did and got another cat then the kitty was happy and more relaxed.

Cats like companionship so, if you can afford it, get another cat. But remember that if he is used to being alone the new cat will be coming into his territory so there could be fights before they adjust to each other. Some cats, like my own, like being alone. He likes to visit other cats but wants to come home to his own territory. He does behave like a nervous mother when I'm late or stay out all night. "Where have you been?" "I waited up all night!" "Do you know what time it is?" Meow! Meow! Meow!

Leave the radio or the TV on, and a few toys out.

Your cats will PROBABLY modify his sleep schedule for while you're away, so don't worry too much.

You could leave a drapery open too, so the cat could look out at the world, cats LOVE being in high places, so i bet "looking down on the world" will be fun for him.

No, most cats are territorial and like having their own space. They'll only be with eachother when needed. They are not pack animals, like dogs.

My 2 cats are mother and daughter and they happily live separatealy and barely coincide with eachother at all.

Only you know your cat. Would he be happier with a playmate? Did he come from a home with other cats?
