I think everyones missing the point, for lunch they will have cheese, salad, pickles, thick hunk of bread etc, for tea they probably have twelve pints of beer and a ruby like the rest of us, difference is they probably deserve it.

Whatever he feels like I presume! but in the days when ploughing was done with horses I should his imagine his appetite was very large. On a good day you could plough 1 acre per day with a single furrow 10" plough pulled by 2 horses. To plough one acre you would need to have walked behind that team for at least 12 miles ( no need for jogging or weightwatchers in those days! ) Then after tea you would have to go out, feed and groom your horses, clean their feet ready for the next day. Not forgetting of course, any other jobs that needed doing before bedtime, feeding livestock, milking. Ah the good old days?

Ploughman's lunch. Cheese, crackers, homemade pickles and preserves, fruit, no meat....meat's too expensive for ploughmen.
