Jesus asked the people, "why can you not read the signs of the times?" He also took time explaining to his disciples, when they asked, what signs of the end times would be. This indicates to me that Jesus thought a knowledge about such things is necessary.
You're right in that how we act in this life, to reflect the love of Jesus, is what's important. I also think it's wise to know what is going on around us, and knowing what the bible has to say about the end times. I am not obsessed with it, but I do have some knowledge of the order of events...and I find it interesting to see, what I believe, is God's word fulfilling itself all around us.

People find it fascinating to speculate, when it becomes an obsession is when this becomes a stumbling block in a christians walk. Many live with the thought that after this life is all there is, they forget that there is much work to do now.
The fields are ripe for the harvest.

I haven't figure that one out myself yet.
Except that ALL Christian religions come from the archtype set up by Constatine, which was based upon the roots of Peter, Paul and John.
All the pomp and circumstances. It all comes from the Catholic roots.
Most Christans actually follow the teachings of Peter and Paul and John, not Jesus.
It should rightfully be called the Disciplian religion.

It fits in with the human need to know the future, does it not?
And that we should know about the last times so that we will be ready.
The Bible says watch.
You have to know what you are watching for.
If you are ready, you go in. If not you don't.
The ten virgins had oil in their lamps, 5 had more oil, the ones that had more went in, they were ready.
It is not straw man theories if you seek the truth yourself.
You see, He is coming back for those who are waiting for Him.
